What are the advantages of getting an AM2 mobo and CPU over choosing the 939 mobo and cpu?

At the moment, not really anything other than future proofing.

Toms hardware did a very in depth review (Click here).

Reverse Hyperthreading is suppose to work on AM2, just need to get a bios update.

The only thing at the moment that AM2 offers for performance over it's S939 is using higher bandwidth DDR2 800 memory. Otherwise it's the same CPU models (except the new 5000+ and FX62 CPUs). Though it also has a future.

The big thing is compatibility with the new AMD CPUs in the next year. They switched to a new socket with DDR2 memory now for the industry. Now all the OEM's that use AMD (HP, Compaq, Gateway etc) can cut costs by just use DDR2 for both their AMD and Intel systems. Later AMD will come out with more speed bumps and switch from 90nm to 65nm (Faster, less power, more OCing). That is were you will see the improvements and be able to upgrade just your CPU.

If being able to upgrade just your CPU doesn't not matter to you then Socket 939 is fine. I'm looking hard at Socket 939 after AMD does their price drops because I just bought DDR memory and I don't want to buy memory again for a different platform (DDR2).

So it's worth it in the long run :P

Thanks for clearing that up.

Are you buying a new system?

If you can, wait til after July. Prices are dropping then (up to 50% for AMD's X2 line) and Intel will launch Conroe.

Doesn't AM2 also allow CPUs to consume less power than their S-939 counterparts?

There are 2 types of AM2 cpus. one is just a regular cpu that consumes 89 W for some cpus (X2 processors) while the other is the energy efficient cpu that consumes 35 W (Athlon 64) and 65 W (X2 processors)
