Advanced Micro Devices said Tuesday it was demonstrating its first dual-core microprocessors along with HP’s four-way server machine at its facilities in Austin, Texas. The announcement marks availability of the world’s first x86-64 processors and confirms AMD’s position to ship commercial dual-core chips next year.

Each processing engine has its own level-two cache, which means that the chip contains more than 2MB of onboard memory, but one dual-channel memory controller as well as three HyperTransport links.

Not really anything new as far as information but it's nice to see things progressing.

Being pin compatible with shipping systems today (Socket 940), is a very big thing.

Meh I've had a dual core since last year!!11oneone

Ok, so the cores are a little far apart, and they each need their own cooler and ..ehm.. i bought them in two different stores... but they're on the same motherboard!!11oneone11?!

Seriousely though, good news from AMD again :P

will it make gaming any better?

it had to be asked
Only if you are running something intensive in the background.
Games don't take advantage of two cores, CPUs or threads yet.

It's more for Workstations and Servers although it will aid multitasking on the desktop.
Traditional microprocessors and personal computers have always had only one processing engine, or core. While single-core central processing units packed with advanced capabilities and operating at high speed delivers enough performance to the vast majority of today’s applications in desktop segment, servers and powerful workstations, which have to handle many operations at once need more than one processing engine to execute two or more threads simultaneously.
Although I've always wanted a Dual CPU system, but never had the money for one. Now it will be more than possible and should cost less than dual CPUs.
