AMD said near deal to buy ATI
Advanced Micro Devices Inc., the No. 2 supplier of computer processors, is close to a deal to buy graphics chip maker ATI Technologies Inc. for $5.5 billion, a source familiar with the situation said on Friday. (...) Unless talks break down, a deal could be announced as early as Monday, the source said.

Wow, this would totally shake up of the semi-conductor market. And imagine the possibilities ....

Hm, yeah, I wonder what the deal will be with people who want to run nVidia cards on AMD chipsets. hmm.

They will run with no problems. Why would AMD want to alienate at least half of the market?

lol, didn't you notice the other thread about amd buying ati?

AMD board approves acquisition of ATI, bankers confirmed.
"According to a report in the Globe and Mail, the board of directors at AMD has allegedly approved the take over of Canadian graphics firm ATI Technologies. The reports said that the information was released by an investment banker that was part of the discussions. According to other sources, AMD executives were also seen at ATI's headquarters in Thornhill, Ontario. The report indicated that AMD is considering a $5.6 billion takeover bid for ATI."

Zomg! ATI physic card in a HTX slot here we come. (maybe wishful thinking)

Holy Shit. Imagine the possibilities :O

I don't see ATI selling out to AMD. Sure AMD might want it, but there's no reason for ATI, who also sells products to Intel, to become a branch of AMD. This would limit them to one side of the CPU market.

This comes from Asus (the hl2.net member):
With Intel will only supporting Crossfire for dual GPUs, more ATI products will sell. And that means SLI is exclusive to AMD so more AMD+Nvidia sales. That would be funny if AMD did buy ATI. lol
As you can see, it'd be awkward as hell.

However, every company has a price, and $21-23 per share is a damn good one, as the current share price is about $16-17.

I agree. It would just make upgrading a lot more confusing.

How would that be possible?

PCI-Express is universal. If ATI changed it, it wouldn't be a PCI-E slot =/

It's this. It's a merger all right.

On July 24, 2006, AMD and ATI announced a plan to join forces, in a transaction that will combine AMD’s technology leadership in microprocessors with ATI’s strengths in graphics, chipsets and consumer electronics. The result is a processing powerhouse: a new competitor, better equipped to drive growth, innovation and choice for its customers in commercial and mobile computing segments and in rapidly-growing consumer electronics segments. The transaction, valued at US $5.4 billion, is expected to close in Q4 2006 subject to approval by ATI shareholders, court approval, regulatory approvals and other customary closing conditions.

But it's still dependent on ATI shareholder approval (doubtful) and federal regulation against monopoly (also doubtful).

I also doubt ATI's shareholders would turn the merger down, considering ATI's share price rose on news that they would be trying to merge.

A CPU sharing a cache with the Graphic Card? Could this allow for player interactive gfx card physics? I know that it is believed that the graphic card doing physics would be laggy due to latency times.
