I have a question for you computers gurus outthere :).
Im planning to build my own computer. I want to use an AMD64 bit 3000+ because my friend said it was better for gaming than a P4 3.0GHZ. I want to know if this is true. Also Im planning to use the ASUS K8N-E mobo looks really nice only if it was a bit cheaper.. Here the links to my products.

My supposedly AMD
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-103-424&depa=1
MOBO: http://usa.asus.com/prog/spec.asp?m=K8N-E Deluxe&langs=09

P4
CPU: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=19-116-171&depa=1
MOBO: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-464&DEPA=1

What system do you think will be faster using the same amount of ram and what not... and im not planning to overclock or anything. Im using FX5200 but im planning to sell it and get something better possibly a high end radeon nothing over 200 though. thanks

One more hehe, 64 bit how does it work and what does it all mean I know how hyper threading works teehee but thanks.

AMD is a lot better for over all gaming purposes. However, most games do not support 64 bit. You also need to look at the compatibility, is the ASUS K8N-E compatible with the CPU? Overall, I would go with Intel, as I've never had problems with them.

go for the amd 64 3000+ ;) i have one with my k8t neo...very nice

Alright im going to talk to the guy thats going to help me build it he probably can get this stuff a little cheaper and I have an intel 1.5ghz, fsb 100mhz and its not to great.. hehe

AMD's are cheaper and are real workhorses, but a good P4 is always nice too, it's more robust too. My AMD was er.. busted wide open when i put my watercooling in. But in the long run, i'd go for the AMD.

Maybe swap the Asus board for an Abit board (This one to be exact) because you might want to take a look at This here :)

It allows for locking the PCI/AGP bus allowing you to turn your £150 A643000+ into a £500 A643800+ nearly with appropiate cooling (you could still clock it high with just normal, not standard, cooling)

In theory this is probably the Barton2500+ equivalent...it is mighty cheap and is mighty coooool. Obviously if you dont plan on overclocking or anything then Asus or Abit mobo's are fine...both companies rule the mobo business imo :)

Edit/ Heh i should of looked, that board has locked AGP/PCI bus too it seems...but that board is new and will cost a pretty penny ovet the Abit one already out (though the bios for allowing that isnt publicly released yet, But will be for sure soon)

Thanks Alig, but im going to wait a little till the mobo actually comes out and get some reviews on it I bet newegg will have it by then the ASUS mobo. But ASUS seems to offer a little mroe with the mobo 2ghz HT so.. Ill see but im impressed with the article. Danke

I switched from P4 3.0 800 fsb to Amd 64 3200+ (2200MHz, 512 cache) and I can't really tell any difference. I would go as far as saying that in windows P4 was quicker, especially when switching between multiple applications....

I still have it though, anyone interested ? MB+CPU for about $215

Here are some benchmarks. Link
The P4 3.0E obviously is slower in gaming.
The P4 'c' would be a better choice, compared to the 'e'. Although the A64 will still beat it in gaming pretty easy.

The P4 system will be more a bit more money because of the cost of the mainboard. The A64 boards average 120$. Some being ~90$ while others are up to ~140$. The A64 will be more forgiving with higher memory timings.

Gaming? A64.

Here is another review which compares many different graphics cards on a P4 3.2c and A64 3200+ systems.

My A64 3000+ OCes to 2.4Ghz on stock voltage and stock cooling. Cool&Quiet keeps the power consumption and temps low when it's @ idle. I love it.

i have the a64 fx-53, i gotta be honest idk if its just me but i dont really notice much of a difference in games than from my 3.0 p4. why do u think that is honestly?

Good job, so you are saying you wasted $800 of your parent's money? GOOD JOB!

i mean all games even ut2k4, r6, cod, and most other of modern day games run without a hitch and load fast as hell so i guess that counts as faster.

edit - my money. but if u want to keep using the lame old parents money joke ur more than welcome.

Why the hell would you ever take an AMD FX-53 when u had a 3.0? its not like the 3.0 is dated...wow good job wasting your parents money or yours or whoevers.

When you have a 200$ CPU and enough FPS, you probably won't notice a difference at standard resolutions for most games. It depends on your gfx card as well.

What you will surely notice is how far you can push it before it is unplayable or reduced performance.

I will agree, that the A64 does load applications and windows faster.
