Good analysis by HardOCP. On average, the new chips consume more power and offer worse performance than most of the Intel counterparts. Right now, the only advantage they have over Intel is pricing, but once the lower end Yorkfields are released in the coming months, this won't be an issue for Intel at all. This may not bode well for prices in the future though, as Intel is most likely free to raise prices without any negative results. Hopefully AMD can spin out something great soon, or it will be hard times for enthusiasts.

Edit: Here is another review by Anandtech with a similar, disappointing conclusion.

Wow! The long waited Phenom is DOA as far as Intel is concern?
I agree with Anand; AMD should scrap these useless 9600 and 9700 and just battle Intel with the 9900 in the price-field until they come up with a better product.

This is very disappointing to AMD fans worldwide

I think I remember reading that these guys were supposed to have a big bump in floating point performance. But most stuff desktop users use deals with integer performance.

For **** sake, this really isn't boding well for the industry.

No Indeed.

History has proven; Two battle fronts is somewhat bad idea. AMD made the wrong move buying ATI.
Now they have to battle with two Giants; Intel and Nvidia. They're once again the underdog. This time, twice.

Dang I was really wishing AMD could deliver something competitively, not only to buy but to encourage Intel to put out better processors. Example: Nvidia

****. Not long before Intel start cranking up the price of their new CPU's to an absurd price range. :(

We desperately need the competition, even if you don't like AMD or ATI (or intel or nvidia).

I wonder if this means AMD is going to return to being an "alternative" budget brand that offers lower-priced but still comparable performance to the competition.

Lets hope not.

AMD reached the unreachable place (Beating giant Intel in it's own game).
A stand down would give Intel the iron gloves, and that would mean; serious unrecoverable spot for AMD. If AMD chooses to be the poor-man's chips again; Intel will run AMD out of market.
Price-war is not a long term option for AMD and their best interest, Intel can fight AMD anywhere and still beat it, unless, AMD does straighten their business out and come back to where they used to be. Even, if AMD ties down Intel (Performance and pricewise) that's would be win/win situation for AMD.

This AMD dilemma did not start by Conroe, it started with AMD's long vacation and not worrying about Intel.

I heard rumors about Ruiz leaving (fired maybe?), I sure hope it's true (thank god Henry is already gone, he's been worse than "Baghdad Bob"). That guy came in on the coattails of Sanders when everything for K8 was already in motion. He's done absolutely nothing for AMD (no, the X2 is not his doing, K8 aka Hammer was originally supposed to be a dualcore chip right from the start). Too bad they spent all that time years ago buying Intel copies of "Dualcore for Dummies" instead of R&D. It almost seemed like everyone at AMD thought Intel would push Netburst for many more years to come, not sure why... Way to go Ruiz.

I was waiting to see what AMD could muster before building a completely new computer but if the Phenom is as dissapointing as they say in the reviews then I guess I may as well go Intel.

I heard the same rumor but nothing is confirmed so far. And yes K8 overstayed it's welcome and AMD should move on with new ideas.

Just like coming back from a long vacation; AMD has lots of catchup to do, while (On the other hand) Intel is three steps ahead, and still pushing.

So going with Intel is 100% sure bet at the moment.

Good Luck.

My AMD's are good an all, but I seriously need quad core. If 8 cores isn't as good as they are suppose to be, then fuc* the lot of them. My 7950s are needing a good upgrade too, so I might just get the G92 and an intel.

Back to work to earn them first though.

The Q6600 looks awesome but I just don't have enough money to throw down on new components yet :(
