How about a Starship Troopers HL2 mod? There are many things to take into consideration, so I'll put them into topics:
SKINS
A soldier skin would be in order, nothing really special, but then you would need his weapons. I figured that there would be about 6 weapons: the "standard issue" SMG, grenade launcher, RPG, pistol, grenade and combat knife.
There would need to be roughly 3 different skins if only for variation.
As for the bugs, the ant-lion skin with colour tweaking and a size increase would work extremely well. The strider would make a good base for the enourmous armoured one, if only because of its size. The flying bug is a no brainer, just a warrior with wings. Perhaps a "brain bug" skin would be needed, just for an objective, and I have no clue where to start with that one...
GAMEPLAY
Starting again with the soldier, he should have average speed, strength, ect. Pretty much what we're used to. As for the weaponry...
The SMG's primary fire would be just a hail of leadish doom, while the secpndary fire is supposed to be a shotgun blast.
The grenade launcher is extremely similar to the SMG, so the best option to take would to give it a shotgun primary fire and a grenade-lobbing alt-fire. Should start with 10 grenades.
The RPG is prbably best left as it is, with two exceptions; a bigger blast radius and a scope.
The pistol and grenades, I fell, do not need tweaking, where as the knife would act just like the crowbar.
As for the bugs, the standard warrior should be fast, powerful and must be able to take clips of damage at a time, all for one major disadvantage; the lack of any ranged attack or stealth capability. Although, it might be an idea to let the warriors wall-crawl for 3 seconds at a time. In order to balance the warriors more, weak spots under the chin and on top of the head are the best way; it should be better than getting a headshot on a human character.
The large armoured bug(from now on the "Tankbug") will be huge, powerful, slow, almost impervious to harm and vulnerable. Yes, that's right. In order to balance this for multiplayer, Tankbugs should be vulnerable from the underside, and since the player can't actually look down that far, he would be, for all intents and purposes, screwed.
The flying bug would prabably work best as a normal warriors, which can:
-fly
-not wall walk
-sustain slightly less damage
CUSTOMISING YOUR SOLDIER
To let players have more choice and strategy when playing, I feel it would be best to let them customise their character's arsenal.
It would work like so:
The player has 10 "Firearm Points", which he can choose to spend on a variety of weapons, which are: the SMG, the grenade launcher, the RPG, the pistol, grenades, and the combat knife.
The pistol and knife come free of charge, and you spend the 10 points on any number of grenades and/or firearms. Here are the costs:
Grenade- 2 points
SMG- 4 points
Grenade Launcher- 6 points
RPG- 10 points
Note for balance issues that the 10 grenades that come in the grenade laucnher should be half as effective in blast radius and damge as normal grenades are.
So there's my little idea...
*This is my idea. I cannot make mods because I don't have the skill. This is for anyone who's interested, would keep me updated, and credit me with the gameplay ideas. If you haven't noticed, the above suggestion were created to suit both single and multi-player. If you wish to see how well the idea works, play Aliens vs. Predator 2. Without Predators.
