The popular hardware site AnandTech has posted an extensive article on Valve's High Dynamic Range technology, covering practically everything from in-game performance tests to how it actually works.

Here are some interesting facts on the performance impact:

"
Performance-wise, we've seen how the HDR effects have a significant impact on performance in Day of Defeat, and in some cases, the impact was surprising. On cards like the X800 and the 6600 GT, it's interesting to see how HDR requires the kind of resources that would effectively cut your framerate in half, especially given the general subtlety of the lighting effects."

Read the article in its entirety right here.

Whereas on cards like the 9600 XT, the impact is barely noticable...

Yeah, I was surprised with how well my 9600XT ran with HDR and at first, thought it was like that with all cards...

I really dont agree at all with HDR, its cool i guess if you want "Picture" perfect graphics...

but i think the gaming industry needs to focus on graphics, not light blooms.

i have a x800xtpe pcix, i rull all high settings HDR max, 6xaa 0xaf 1024

i think the lowest i ever saw my FPS was 30, my x800xtpe is fine, wait do you guys have the x800xt or x800xtpe?

but heres the catch,

that lowest 30 FPS, = 150 FPS in CSS.

i get no video lagg, slowing, lagging, or what so ever visualy, so im happy.

P.S. the natural home for HDR is in de_dust, not DOD, and i can argue this on many grounds. first DOD dark times, needs to be more gloomy, ruins, and smoke all over not ****ing lighting, i think thats more than an enough arguemenbt

what you say no.... let me prove it

You all have Doom 3, if you ever have flintched while you were playing you cant argue against me on this topic, doom 3 set the mode. HDR needed to go to CSS first not DODS. and now we get into politics of marketing which i would rather stay away from.

PUT FULL BLOWN HDR ON DE_DUST, your retinas will start to bleed. then and only then youll thank me for it. valve needs to higher me as a private consultant.

HDR isn't light bloom, light blooms are light blooms. HDR is simply an advanced lighting method than can be used to control light blooms among other visual effects. There's more going on with HDR in DoD than simply pretty glows around the sun.

wait a minute gegam, Valve has indeed included High Dynamic Range lighting in CS:S. check for yourself, its under the submenu of advanced video settings in CS:S's options. And if you have played the game latly, then you would have noticed, unless its off by default cause the game detects inefficient hardware to support it, but I doubt thats the case. But, obviously you have no idea of what your talking about.

Actually that option is available in HL2 aswell, but its useless unless a map happens to have HDR support, otherwise you wont see a difference.

there is no HDR effects in CS:S, wtf you talking about theres HDR in CSS

HDR isn't only blooming. It's a way of working lighting without taking point light entity information.

And lighting is the most important aspects of graphics. If there was none of it in real-life, what would you see? Nothing.

you really need to get with the program and investigate gegam, steam updated source a few days back. Like I said, HDR is enabled in the advanced video setting of the options menu. And yes player models do support this, and apparently maps have to be coded to use it.

That's a bold statement, about it cutting framerates in half. Runs pretty smooth with my usual settings from HL2 in DOD:S. Could be that I'm using a PCI Express card & have that 8 lane highway for all the data, I suppose.

Besides, even if it did cut it in 2, you're only seeing as much as your monitor's refresh rate allows. Which for me is like 75 fps; way more than the human eye needs to compute smooth motion.

Also, what's with this retarded habit of running at the highest possible resolution? 1600x1200? Hell, cut that in 2 & throw in some basic AA, your going to be too busy getting shot at to notice some jagged edges.

Look at the charts, they aren't making it up. ;) I'm suprised with how big an impact the X800 takes, I don't notice all that much of a difference myself.

x800xt :sniper:

I have the PCIExpress version of the x800xt and haven't had any problems with frame rate at all. I'll admit that I don't go to the trouble of checking my frame rate like many other do so that they can brag about how their rig can kick your rigs fps. I just play my games, and if it looks awesome I just enjoy the experience. Since I started playing DOD: S I haven't had any frame rate problems at all. I have everything cranked up to the highest level and it's beautiful. I'll leave all that nit-picking to the boys that have nothing to be proud of except the box their mommy and daddy bought for them ;)

Your framerates are cut in half on a 6600GT? That's news to me as I have a 6600GT (AGP even), and I'm getting excellent framerates comparable to what I get in Half-Life 2 and Counter Strike: Source.

omg, if its in css, and css has bots, then i can checks it out on mes 56k
