Where are all the animals in the HL universe??are they not presented ingame or are they ''all'' killed by combine,zombies,antlions...
if they do get killed how comes we dont see any dead bodys around..
(dunno if this belongs in this forum)

well kleiner and barney supposedly did something horrible to a cat with the teleporter...

Um...it's been like, 10 years since the Cascade. You don't suppose in that time the dead Xenians would be removed?

Wait, when you say animals you mean like, real animals or the baddies you fought in HL? I assumed you meant the baddies since you see wildlife around in HL2, birds and such.

Throughout the game you see some birds and it would make sense that you wouldn't see many animals, since HL2 and EP1 both take place in City 17. I think the antlions probaly ate all the racoons. EP2, however, takes place in the wastelands and forests outside of C17; so it's possible we may see more furry critters.

There's probably very little Earthly wildlife left (but birds and a few pets), Xen species for the most part seem to be much stronger. And we saw almost no animals in HL2 and EP1 because they take place in a city and on a coastline ruled by antlions.

20 years.

Leehes would have devoured all the sea creatures. And Innerrayg it has since been retocnned to 20 years. :D

by animals i mean animals...real animals

It'd be strange to find no animals in the forest of Episode 2. The forest looks thick enough to support some sort of ecosystem.

Birds are real enough for me...especially when they walk back and forth like they're stoned or something.

Yeah. Real busy.
Busy busy beavers.

No time to frolick or forage.

Remind me of the crab pod in Lost Coast, pretty nice description by the old man.

what aboutthe xenian animals though? I imagine gargantui (octopus, octopi) would be pretty hard to get rid of.

I imagine given the quality of the food handed out by the combine, any pets would have been eaten long ago.

notice in the ambience, you can hear birds... from what I know... all the animals >excluding some birds< have been eaten, hunted, enslaved (hey, it's possible), relocated, converted into combine (hey, a horse in a combine suit could be pretty cool!), or they are being stored in the citadel while being slaughtered to make tampered food products!

wow..then they killed soooo many lives
damn u combine

I would like a pet houndeye.

I'd just sit and poke it in the eye all the time and listen to it whine.

tee hee hee. feels like jelly.

I think it would be pretty amazing to see a pack of wolves take down a few antlions in the woods in ep 2.

Yeah it would be cool to see Earth animals taking on Xen animals! Maybe after the combine is defeated and everything will be almost back to normal Gordon will organised figths between Xen and Earth animals and citizents will be able to bet.
It will be like an elephant against a king antlion or something.

While I would love nothing better than to watch a bear take on a bullsquid, it sorta seems like a one-sided battle. I mean, wolves are cool and all, but furry mammels fighting giant flying insects with sharp limbs can only end in a massacre.

Oh, and "cat vs Hydra" would be freaking hillarious.

Most animals on Earth were probably wiped out.
20 years of attack by completly hostile animals can mess up anything.

I doubt Xen animals like the Garg are still wandering around, the amount of attention they would attract would most likely cause the Combine to actively hunt them down.

I'm sure some earth animals could survive, wolves and mice maybe.

wut bout insects?? (nvm nobody cares about insects)

What remains of the animals in the HL2 world is an interesting topic, it's just a shame that it's a topic that wouldn't be explored in any real depth in a shooter game. It's more the kind of thing you'd explore in a speculation forum or a fanfic. I.E. nowhere of any real worth :p Here are some random thoughts:

1. Because HL is a FPS series, the Xen creatures tend towards an unnaturally agressive portrayal. Basically every creature engage in combat with you, they don't run away. Would this really be the case in a theoretical scenario? Important to note that Half-Life 2 gives us only the Zombies and Antlions: the former are mindless, thus violent, and the later though intelligent are agressive because you tresspass on their land.

2. It is important to remember that whilst we don't see many examples of terrestrial lifeforms, we also don't see a lot of examples of xenian lifeforms either. Because few - if any - terrestrial lifeforms make convincing antagonists, they can only really be atmospheric additions. Putting development time into any such creature as pretty pointless.

3. Larger Xenian lifeforms were probably hunted and killed prior to the 7 hours war, and are probably harvested by the Combine. As soon as intelligence comes in about a Gargantua roaming the wastes, it would make sense to eliminate it. They're simply too much of a threat. Though if it is roaming around in a resistance occupied area, extermination may be put on the back-burner for a while.

4. I don't see the blanket obliteration of Earth's wildlife as possible. The biodiversity of the Earth now is extraordinary, and I the Xen animals aren't even in the dimension that they were adapted to. Antlions seem to be doing pretty well for themselves, zombies to. But what beef have either got with mice, butterflies or penguins?

5. How did people react when the Xenian lifeforms first arrived? Perhaps in the chaos of the portal storms, someone somewhere recognised the threat to animal life and made it their mission to make their own noah's ark, a DNA bank or storage facility. Equally likely is that the Combine made their own Noah's ark for far less philanthropic reasons (I can just imagine a combine lab being picketed by Greenpeace members. I don't suppose the Combine have their own Body Shop either...). I particularly like the idea that a chef somewhere wanted to expand his pallette and people went out hunting for Xen animals the cook and eat... before the combine of course, at which point the wastes were left to waste that much more.

6. Just a thought: did we see a single bird or earth animal in Half-Life 2 Episode One? Seems they had the sense to flee the scene. But then, the crows almost seemed to have a link to the G-Man...

You make a good point, in a real scenario not all the alien creatures would be predatory. I think many Earth creatures would survive. Some of the Xen creatures have exaggerated resilience just to be a challenge for the player. For example the Gargantua, although it does have a tough exoskeleton I doubt it could resist to a satcell charge if it existed in real life. My point is there are plenty of though Earth animals that could survive this hypothetical situation. Take the crocodile for example, it's kind has survived for so long, if you put it against a bull squid more then likely that the bull squid would be ripped apart.

wait a second..if all the animals were killed what do human eat?

Headcrabs. Full of protein, for that double-human flavory goodness!
