annoying doom3 bash defend thread thingy

They should call it Quadroplayer.

Doom 3 features a highly advanced quadroplayer mode with extremely detailed stains on peoples pants.

Some new doom3 info i just came by on another forum...

"The game is said to be so GPU dependent that for the first time, Carmack has stated he feels he has the spare CPU cycles to 'waste' on extensive enemy AI. Monsters will seek out the player with their senses, and CEO Todd Hollenshead described one moment during an internal play testing session, where a nine foot infected marine with a chain gun was seeking him out, firing randomly around itself as it probed the dark. Hollenshead described how he waited intently for the monster to pass him as it searched, before leaping out behind it in ambush. It is cinematic moments like these that give a glimpse of the type of game play Id are trying to attach to their five star engine."

That should dispell some of the idiocy in a few hl2 fanbois that are under the dillusion that hl2 is the only game that is doing anything cool with AI.

"The developers have also stated a preference for the recent trend for more intense, but shorter games, although Carmack reassured worried fans that the game would be far longer than some of the more recent FPS releases."

Should dispell the idiocy found in a few hl2 fanbois who misunderstood the carmack quote about "experienced players could beat the game within a weekend if the tried" to mean that the game is uber short. All carmack was saying was that a really good player could run through the entire game within a weekend if he tried to beat it really fast.

And just for good measure.......

"The release of Doom 3 will likely be another seminal moment in the history of gaming, and the little company from Texas will once again be making its presence felt all across the industry. A major Id release constitutes a technological boundary point - everything before is old and limited, everything after advanced and full of promise. "

Also a cool thing from another articelo n another site.....

"Whilst on the subject of glass, we also noticed that when broken exterior windows created a vacuum and sucked everything outside – very cool."

And again for the idiots who think 4 player MP will suck simply because its 4 player, as far as i know its weather or not the MP is fun that matters. Am i wrong? Is a mediocre large scale MP better than a kick ass small scale MP? Everyone says the MP is very fun and introduces new gameplay due to the possibilities with th elighting. And despite what you may think about the FIRST MAP made by splash damage(with the doom3 tech) shown at quakecon, everyone who was actually there says it looks ****ing sweet, despite its low resolution and no AA.

Doom3 will be an awesome gaming experience, and i pity the fools who wont be able to enjoy it simply because they falsely perceive it to be the opposition of their beloved hl2.

id Programmer: Hey John shouldn't we put multiplayer into Doom 3?
John Carmack: WTF is that??
id Programmer: It's like when you have more then one player playing online.
John Carmack: So like 2 players at the same time?? ok whatever

-- two months later --

id Programmer: Good news I have the multiplayer ready! And I decided to double the number of players.
John Carmack: 4 players!? thats sick man!

your hopeless. you owe your entire hobby to iD, yet you are just a hater =\ fnaboi.

Unfortunatelly, I must refrain from posting the square-headed imp as I already made a promise to somebody not to do it again.

what does that have to do with anything? Everyone knows that particular imp model from the alpha has an angular head when seen from head on. What does that prove?

The fact that i post detailed and informative posts and you return with fanboi bullshit only goes to show that im wasting my time with you. Be content in the delusion that hl2 is grand daddy of all games and nothing else compares, ill be content with being able to enjoying 2 awesome games instead of one.

Why only two?

Im looking forward to (in no order):

DooM3
HL2
Halo for PC
FarCry
And maybe Stalker.

Its rather obvious why i say two. Obviosly there are many more enjoyabel games coming out, but the topic at hand is doom3 and hl2, hence why i say two.

Well at least you think HL2 is a great game too. Seriously I think Doom might have an upper hand in the shadow department, but otherwise it's just a run-of-the-mill FPS. Nothing special.

I might buy it if I see that my system is capable of running it.

Stalker will def. be one of the funnest games to come out in '04, if for no other reason than its non-leniar gameplay, 8 endings to the story depending on the decisions you make during the game, and co-op mode.

Stalker is all talk right now. I've seen them release a group of half-descent tech demos (usually involving a fly-by through a forest or blowing up rats), but no concrete gameplay.

Seriously I think Doom might have an upper hand in the shadow department, but otherwise it's just a run-of-the-mill FPS.

There is no info out there at all that would suggest that Doom3 is another "run-of-the-mill FPS" What even makes you belive that? Every little tidbit of info suggest that doom3 is not a simple run and gun as most uninformed people assume, and it will be unlike any other game before it in its gameplay. It is completley unique, what is run-of-the-mill about it?

And ofcorse doom3 has the upperhand on shadows and lighting, how could a game using light mpas even compare to a game in which every single light is dynamic and interacts with the environment. Honestly, lightmaps will very soon be a thing of the past.

Also, its new sound engine "sounds" superior to anything i have seen in any game out or any upcoming game so far. And its physics system will be quite extensive, easily comparable to hl2. The thing about hl2 is that the developers made physics demos out of some of the maps to make for fun and interesting gameplay, while doom3 is focusing on something totally different, which leads to people thinking hl2 physics > doom3 physics. But the simple fact is that from what we know about BOTH engines, nothing can really be done in one that cant be done in the other with physics.

Also, contrary to your opinion im sure, doom3 models are far more detailed and ebtter looking than hl2 models with the implimentation of normal maps. Sure in screen caps you will see a edge or two(and yea that imp model is rather poor) but in motion the edges will hardley be noticible, and the extreame amount of detail and smoothness on the rest of the model, with every minute detail down to a dimple in the skin reacting to the lighting, is a very fair tradeoff.

The normal map comparison is pretty much useless now since we have the two new vids detailing all the normal map goodness in HL2.

yea, a wall, gg. Normal maps will only be used in limited times in hl2. When you look at characters the texture on them is embarassingly 2d and flat/bland. If they would apply normal mapping to these characters such detail could actually appear 3d and much mroe real, but they havnt. Doom3 will have normal maps applied to EVERY character and EVERY surface in the game. So how then is hl2 comparable to doom3 when it comes to normal maps?

Another thing of note, normal maps applied to objects are 100x better with dynamic lighting also interacting with that object, as you saw in the hl2 vid with the wall. You wont see that kind of stuff very often if at all in hl2, due to the static lighting.

In hl2 you will have the occasional wall or floor look awesome due to normal maps, but in doom3 every ****ing surface will look awesome due to normal maps and light interaction.

Thats no small feat considering all surfaces are either black computer-covered walls or dark caves.

The game takes place on martian bases and in hell, techy bases and dark caves are what you would expect in such a case. Its the design of the game world. That has nothing to do with normal maps and i dont see what point you are trying to make. Perhaps you could type more than one sentence posts anbd actually try to get a point across?

Ide rathe rnot go so far as to create a collage of screenshots to show how much the color in the game actually varies(it varies a great deal) What color would you expect martian bases to be? What would you expect to be in a martian base dedicated to scientific research if not computer terminals and such? The doom3 world is very consistant.

Or blood smeared.

All right, I would like to see some of those highly detailed character models you mentioned. And please real screenshots only. No magazine scans where the image was blurred due to scanning and resizing.

This here, for example is a terrible use of bump mapping, IMO.

LOL! ROFL!

You say you dont want any official screenshots of how the game will actually look in later builds with hardware it was intended to run on, and instead you only want screenshots from an early pre-alpha build of the engine that is not optimized in any way for the hardware its running on. LOL!

Give me a minute or two.

LOL I'm just playing with you man. Don't go looking too hard as I got a whole folder of them saved up from my last D3 vs. HL2 discussion. :)

I'm going to sleep now .. be back tomorrow ...

I happen to have a few saved up aswell for times like this when people post ****ed up alpha pics and what not, i just needed time to upload them. I figured you were just ****ing around, but still i cant let such things go unapposed.

The following pic shows how even minute detail such as the rough surface of the pinkys hide look sliek actual geometry instea dof just a 2d texture applied to the model, and how lighting interacts with the smallest skin features such as dimples and wrinkles.

The following pic shows a hellknight model. Again, look how detailed the interior of the model is, especially the face. Again, all of this detail acts as actual geometry and not just a 2d texture.

And i have to throw in a more hellish pic, just cos its doom. Seriously, if you saw this pic and didnt know where it came from, would you honestly think it was a lowpoly game model?
