If it comes to be, I hope its the first cylon war
Syfy, the channel that refuses to acknowledge that having two y's in your four letter name is anything but cool, continues to work hard on mining its best property, the 21st century's version of Battlestar Galactica. With Caprica on the air and indications that it could be renewed, the cable channel revealed that it's in the early stages of developing another spinoff from the BSG universe, one that will return the writer that got the ball rolling again for the franchise.
"We’re looking for other ways to spin off Battlestar beyond Caprica," said Syfy's vice president of development, Mark Stern. "That world is so rich. We’re sitting down with Ron Moore and his team." And then Stern dangled this interesting carrot to BSG fans: "It would not necessarily be a traditional series."
Let the speculation commence.
Battlestar Galactica told the story of the genocide of the Twelve Colonies and the survivors search for the fabled planet of Earth. When it reached the end of its five season run, the final episode gave viewers closure not just to the show's characters but also their mission. Caprica, on the other hand, seeks to keep the BSG franchise alive by setting the action 50 years before Galactica and showing us the creation of the mechanical Cylons. While Caprica ratings (especially its viewers watching it via DVR) are positive and a renewal announcement is a likely possibility, the show is drama heavy and doesn't include BSG's setting of outer space or space combat action. Could a second show set in the BSG universe find a premise that gives us more of that Viper combat action? Perhaps one set during the height of the First Cylon War? Or did any other humans survive the destruction of the Twelve Colonies and set out in a different direction than the Galactica and her fleet?
Regardless of what may or may not happen with the Galactica spinoff show, Syfy has two other new pilot projects bubbling, both involving superheroes. Alphas is a serious look at heroes along the lines of NBC's Heroes while Three Inches takes a comedic view of what it means to be gifted with slightly lame superpowers. The show's title stems from the main character's telekinetic ability; he can move objects with the power of his mind but only three inches away or closer to him. Realizing that his superpower isn't going to get him much attention, the character seeks out other gifted people with less-than-impressive abilities. "Three Inches is a fun, smart, offbeat spin on the superhero genre," Stern said. "It’s a very postmodern approach, with a really wonderful, tongue-in-cheek script."
Both shows need to find their casts. If neither get picked up as series by Syfy the channel will still likely air the pilots.
