Another memory question

I'm dead set on what mobo to get, what gfx to get, what cpu I want etc.. The only thing I'm not sure about is the system memory.

What do you guys think would give best performance?

2x256mb(512mb) PC4000 500MHz memories

or

2x512mb(1024mb) PC3200 400MHz memories?

(512mb pc3200 cost about the same as 1024 pc3200)

I'm leaning towards a pair of OCZ Technology PC4000. But If I wanted to upgrade to 1024mb ram, I would have to sell the ones I have and get 2 new ones. Hmm, tricky :/

Another question.. OCZ Technology or Corsair XMS? Tom's hardware seem to favour OCZ Tech cause they have better over clocking capabilities, but they might be less stabile then Corsair.. Not really sure, I've heard only good things about both of them.

Definately. Unless your running a server or something enormous, you won't need or use 512mb of PC4000 500mhz. Make sure your mobo can handle it too. I'd go with Corsair XMS, that's what I have, but I have 1024mb (2x 512mb) Corsair XMS PC3200 DDR400. It's incredibly fast. I literally have no loading times in most games. Any single player game, GTA: Vice City for instance with max settings takes me literally (I timed it) 4 seconds from the time I click the VC icon, to get into the game.

Oh. Well the 512 then. It's a waste really but your decision. I've read on some review sites most manufacturers of pc4000 have horrible heatspread, thus your sticks could get pretty hot.

If your going to do some heavy overclocking.....faster ram may come in handy..... for syncing with your FSB

if not....you are better off with the 1024 ....as it will be faster if you are not overclocking as much.

Sorry, forgot.. I'm not getting a 2.8GHz any more... I think a 2.4GHz(800MHz fsb) running @ 1000MHz fsb (3GHz?) will sync better with the ram.

Plz correct me if I'm wrong on this one...

yeah becuase if you used ddr400/pc3200 you would have to mess with the timings.. to keep it stable

with the ddr500 you can do 1ghz fsb

about the cpu.....its cheaper and from ive been reading over the past few week can be clocked anywhere from 3.2 to almost 3.6(i saw this on a forum) with air cooling.

-Sapphire Atlantis Radeon 9800Pro 128Mb DDR TV-out DVI Retail AGP


The reason why I don't want OCZ Tech mems anymore is because the ones that cost the same as the Corsair mems was not "gold edition" and those are the ones that have higher over clocking capabilities then Corsair. Also I want 1024mb not 512mb.. I'll just have to scrape together the extra cash some how.

That would be a simliar setup to what i would get if i were buying a pc right now....i might've gone with a differant mobo.

Dont get me wrong ...Asus is my favorite..but for overclocking i would consider Waiting a little and get a new...ABIT IC7-MAX3..or atleast see how it campares.
