I need some Anti-Virus Software, but would like one that I don't have to pay a monthly fee. Anyone know of any?

AVG Free Edition and Avast Home Edition are both good free antivirus programs.

The last time I used AVG, it found "malicious" bugs in every single file on my computer, then went apeshit on me and I ended up having to reformat. I'm scarred for life and never touching that again.

lol

well, its working for me. After a few seconds it found a Trojan Horse Back Door Agent.exe HIDDEN in some software I downloaded. Luckily, I was skeptical and never executed it, acutally I never even unzipped the program. :dork:

cool that it found it. I quickly hit Shift+Delete on that bitch. don't even put it in the recycle bin.

Lets see what else it turns up. :D

Is putting it in the recycle bin potentially unsafe or something? Or is it just that it wasn't necessary and was faster to shift-delete it?

Hmm, no, i just figured there was no point in recycling it. It's not like I will ever want to recover it. lol

I don't think it's unsafe, but I think it's safer to destroy it as completely as possible.

If I'm sure I won't ever need something, I always hold shift+delete. I think it keeps your hard drive less defragmented and frees up hard drive space.

You can set up XP to always just delete and bypass the recycle bin, but I don't always want to permanently delete things, so I'd rather keep it this way.

Basically, I figured that I would delete it on my own, instead of letting the software quarantine it.

Know what I mean?

EDIT: well, it's been scanning for almost 4 hours now. This is one drawback of having 4 hard drives. :/ My computer is all gimped and I can't do stuff I want. Hasn't found anything else yet. That's because I'm cautious and weary. You have no idea where I've been... I can walk through fire, mother****ers.

People just looooooooooooooooove to download....Anything as long as they make download bar go like this -------------------- and then they go "Oh! my computer is so fast it can download crap in 10 seconds; it's called Emachine".

Your Internet service provider probably offers anti virus and firewall for free. Adelphia offered and now since Comcast bought Adelphia Mcafee anti virus and firewall is offered to high-speed subscribers for free.

Check with your ISP.

Good Luck.

Not sure what you're on about with download speeds, but thanks for the rest of the advice. I have a boon-docks ISP, and it didn't come with anything but I have good internet speeds.

BTW, the thing finally finished scanning 4 HDD's in just under 4 hours.

AVG seems to do the job fine. The best things in life are free.

I haven't noticed any problems, and am pretty cautious, so I didn't think I had an infection. I re-installed my OS only a couple of weeks ago as well. I was just worried because downloaded some software that looked suspicious, and I was right about it. Luckily I hadn't unzipped and ran the software. It's been sitting in a folder for like 2 weeks. It contained an embedded Trojan that could have allowed them full access to my computer.

I've had my computer for two years, and I haven't got a virus yet. I don't understand how people get them so often. My friend has had to reformat three times in the last five months due to trogens. I don't get it.

Well, a test done by google reports that about 1 in 10 websites are infected with malware. How many will you visit?

I've gotten a virus once. It was immediately recognized by my anti-virus software, and I took the necessary steps to remove it. All I had done was had the web page open. Somehow it found away to transfer itself to my PC. I was so fed up with the problematic software bloat-fest that doesn't even remove the virus, it just tells you about it!

That was a few years ago.

Since then I haven't even used any protection from anything. I knew it was risky. I've been pretty careful. There are certain places you just don't go or you are asking for it. Certain files you just don't download, etc. You can't even mouse hover over some things or you will can be infected. Knowing all of this, I've never had a problem again, since I got my first attack.

Was at my brothers the other night and he looked at me like I was totally insane when I told him I haven't had anything but windows firewall and windows pop-up blocker, and nothing else for years. I was like, " I don't want to pay every month" and he told me I don't have to.

So I created this thread.

So be careful. The software that was infected was a firewall program. See? I was really skeptical because if they can get on the inside of your firewall, you may never know they are inside ur computer, doing whatever they want.

The same reason I had stated above (VirusType 2 didn't get what I meant) is why people get viruses on daily basis.

There are three different type of people who always get viruses and, two different type of people who always get malware.

people who always get viruses are:

1) People who love to steal and always looking for a free version of what you and I paid for (Games, Music and Software).

2) Habitual wankers.

3) People who "Click" anything and everything they come across.

People who always get malware:

1) Shareware lovers

2) People Who can't survive a day without downloading something whether they want it or not and, addicted to the download bar.

^ Definitely. The main protection you can have is yourself. You can decide not to click on things. My main thing is that I never click on any advertisements. I have never trusted them. I try hard not to even let my mouse cross over top of any of them. If I want to buy something, I go to an appropriate web site and do so, I don't try to buy anything from an advertisement.

This is what I was referring to:

Search more about it here on google:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=google+1+in+website+malware

One in 10 web pages scrutinised by search giant Google contained malicious code that could infect a user's PC. Researchers from the firm surveyed billions of sites, subjecting 4.5 million pages to "in-depth analysis".

About 450,000 were capable of launching so-called "drive-by downloads", sites that install malicious code, such as spyware, without a user's knowledge. A further 700,000 pages were thought to contain code that could compromise a user's computer, the team report.

As well as characterising the scale of the problem on the net, the Google study analysed the main methods by which criminals inject malicious code on to innocent web pages. It found that the code was often contained in those parts of the website not designed or controlled by the website owner, such as banner adverts and widgets.

In a test, the researchers' computer was infected with 50 different pieces of malware by visiting a web page hosted on a hijacked server.

ASUS Site Hosting Malware
8 April 2007

It appears the ASUS website has been altered by hackers to host malware. It's not clear the range of malware/exploits being served when users connect to the site, so I would recommend avoiding the ASUS website until the situation is clarified and resolved.

AVG's anti-rootkit free software is now finished and no longer in beta form. I just finished downloading it, and going to run it now to see if I have any detectable rootkits installed on my PC.

You can go here to download any of AVG's free software:

Does it have to be legally free. Or would you like to receive a little pm's with helpful links.

There is a recent report about an email which was sent to unsuspecting recipients; which clearly stated "Free virus, click here to download" and guess what, 450 idiots click it.
Luckily it was a harmless virus but it sure made it to the 5:00 News.

There is no free version in retail. Clicking a link in your PM, chat-room and or in your email; to a free version of retail software; will reward you a decently scripted boot virus in hurry.

Good Luck.

I was just about to say that. Some people will click on anything.

My brotther works for an ISP, and he said that some people click on things even if they say, "this is a virus", and stuff like that.
