Which anti virus would u guys recommend? im getting one for my comp and wanted a good and reliable one.. so what is everyone using these days?

i also need an ad blocker.. hmm.. is the Norton Utilities any good? any other similar programs better?

btw for those needing to know, im using Win XP :)

edit: doh!

i wanted to put a poll..
oh well
answer away..

I would reccoment Nortons antivirus, i use it and i like it. Get that or Fsecures. In my experiences they are the best. And for the ad blocker get ad-aware pro (not the sharware version) it comes with a nice ad blocker.

what about the utilities?

Norton Utilities any good?
any other programs like NU out there?

I dunno, i use norton antivirus 2003 for my antivirus needs, then i use ad-aware for spyware and ad blocking and diskeeper for defragmenting. And cd-rs for backup :)

thanks Maxi :)

I use macaffee......as to how good it is, I'm not really too sure, as it's the only one i've used....seems to catch everything though.

Right...you have all heard of trojans right ?, where someone can control your comp if they infect you.

Well...my bro was into that shit ages ago and half of his victims had NORTON av..., norton couldnt detect the trojan.
The only one he couldnt get past was Kaspersky Antivirus, I suggest you go with that one, www.kaspersky.com (personal pro)

trust me

If I have offended you by sayin my bro could get past norton, please dont take it out on me, i'm only saying the truth

thxs!

WHAT?! omfg i hate u now!!!!

lol j/k

what gave u the idea that i'd be offended? :p

thanks for the tip, i'll keep that in mind.

I like Norton Antivirus 2003, that's what I'm currently using.

For the pop-up blocker, do ya' mean as in web-site pop-ups? Or as in, those "Messenger Service" Windows XP IP Address pop-ups? :)

Don't use Norton Utilities it "finds" things wrong with your perfectly working computer, then "fixes" your computer into not working. Okay, it's not THAT bad, but it doesn't do alot, and it slows your system down alot.

I Use Ad-Aware/Ad-Watch for them IP messenger service things
Popup Ad Filter for web page popups.
Noton AV 2003 for squashing bugs.
For utilities i use Tweak XP pro, System Mechanic.
Then I use Peer Guardian for blocking a few "undesirables"
Then just Boring old Windows firewall.
PLus most of the time i have my system set up through a university proxy which has a kick ass firewall :) Better than i can ever afford...

Its just most people on these boards will go mental about the fact I said norton sucks, I was thinking ahead :D

Does anyone know if the free, AVG anti-virus program is any good for Windows XP? http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

(I'm using Norton Anti-virus 2003 right now. But my subscription expires in a few days. I would buy the 2004 version, but I need to save that money for a new graphics card).

Heh, we posted at the same time: Yeah, it works under XP with NP's.

Good deal. I'll use that then when my Norton subscription runs out.

(Does "NP's" mean, No Problems?)

My Norton Anti-Virus subscription expired today.

So I un-installed it. And I installed the free AVG anti-virus program, and as soon as I started it up, within the second it found a Trojan Horse on my computer.

Isn't that something?

I had Norton Anti-Virus 2003 running constantly, and it never found that Trojan Horse.

But AVG sure did. :E

Plus it does a full system scan a lot faster than Norton. Norton would take about 25 minutes.

But AVG scanned my computer in only 14 minutes. (11 minutes faster than Norton).

AVG all the way.

There's a loophole to NAV subscriptions.. uninstalling NAV and reinstalling it gives you another year subscription.. :)

Did that just happen again? (Like it used to in the past)?

Because a couple of months ago, I had to re-format my computer, and when I re-installed Norton SystemWorks 2003, it had and kept my listing for when it expires.

Oh, well. I'm happy with AVG. It caught that Trojan Horse that Norton didn't.
