antlions- asl?

When you finish HL1 there area where G-man speaks to you-is a desert and there are some grunts,a tank, and a aircraft...is a desert and the sky is a XENIAN sky,so desert-is a nice place to antlions to live...but in HL2 we saw them around coastal shore...i think that the antlions that we fight in HL2 are the descends of the xenian antlion...and with some modifications from the Combine.
Hm. I forgot about that area. It also seemed to be in a large pit.

What's to say the Antlion's exoskeleton isn't made of a material stronger than chitin? :P
I was thinking of that, but whatever it is--at least in the case of smaller antlions--their carapace is made of is probably just enough to withstand the pressure of gravity. Other than that, they're just so...frail, y'know?

Hmm...must have missed that area.
Very few people have seen it, it seems. The first time I fought Nihilanth I never got teleported by him, so the second time around I let him teleport me to all three (or four I think...two areas are the same, just with a garg instead of an ichthy) locations. Interestingly enough when he 'ports you to the ichthy/garg area, he gives the "You are man...he is not man. For you he waits, for you," line.

No one's really sure that's actually Xen. It could be the G-man messing with Gordon's head, showing him the Xen sky but also the New Mexican desert. We don't even know if the military (aside from Shephard) ever made it to Xen. Personally I believe that what he's seeing is really a desert on Xen, and there's no mental tampering going on, but who knows for sure?

And if the antlions had been modified by the Combine they wouldn't be attacking metrocops, there would be no need for thumpers, and they would look considerably more robotic. The Combine has had a lot of time to synthify some of the Xenian creatures, but it appears they chose not to.

They most likely don't live in XEN because Xen is an Asteroid formation >except for the fungi-like floor< which is solid rock... ry t get an ant to dig through that... That's how I see it.

Good point Darkside55 :hmph:

Antlions are able to dig through concrete as seen in Episode 1. They could still dig on Xen, it would just take a while. ;)

Well actually I think there is a planet! If you take a look at that area of xen where the mining devices (thumpers:upstare: ) are you should carefully inspect the "skybox". On the skybox you can clearly see a weird greenish sky with clouds, a pale sun, most importantly a horizon and beneath something that appears to be watter!. So my theory is that Xen indeed is a full scale world just like Earth, the only difference is that somehow it has those weird islands floating somewhere up in orbit. However besides the islands there still is a full size planet with atmosphere, gravity, watter etc.

I think is a dyson sfere...yes a dyson sfere..

If it were indeed a dyson shere, there would be too much light for a green atmosphere...

And although it was changed in the final game, antlions originally were a dull red color with black markings that were reminiscent of bullsquids.
Actually, a number of the Ep. 2 antlions in "the hive" look like they do bear these colors. Might be relevant.

Ophi, use "edit".

Hey, maybe they need sand and water to survive in, they mostly occupied beach areas and there were no beach areas in hl1, so, because they were.. sorta... from xen, the vortigaunts know how to control them, thus them teaching the resistance members and gordon how to use a pheropod. The combine were too busy enslaving the intelligent species of xen to put any thought except in how to keep them away.

Antlions couldnt live on Xen for that matter, first off, their body mass is too light for them to actuually have any maleable inertia, second, if they fly, they fly forever and can never return to the ground. Also, antlion hives would be hard to maintain in a xenian enviorment. Also, Antlion gards are far to heavy to jump and would simply drift.

Well, what about the Gargs? We've never seen them jump, either.
Also, flying doesn't simply give you negative weight in the real world. Antlions would probably be able to control their flight on Xen.
Weren't there birds on Xen? They didn't have any trouble flying around...

In any case, we know they did immigrate though Xen:

Those things [poison and fast headcrabs, antlions] came through during the portal storms, which continue
erratically to this very day. Some of the critters came early
(immediately after the Black Mesa Incident) and adapted to Earth. I
think the poison headcrabs must have eaten something poisonous at one
point, and liked it so much they added it to their repertoire.

portal storms to this day? hmmm.... maybe we could see one, we havent seen a portal since hl1.

No one has given an explanation as to why we didn't see any of these antlions in HL1.
I mean an explanation besides: "the developers didn't think of them yet".

Tough, that's the only explanation :P

And as people have already said, they may not be from Xen either, which means they could have popped up during the portal storms.

I stopped reading here. God has said they came to Earth during the Portal storms from Xen (and any inhabitants in turn came from the Vorti home), and argueing with God is bad :p
Seriously, the guy who writes the story said so, and it doesn't matter how much shens it makes, its true.

That would be awesome with Source.
