Can anyone tell me if there are any books that have a plot similar to Halflife or anything that has to do with alien enslavment or scientists like freeman, or any steampunk. thank you!

I've heard that Stephen King's The Mist has some similarities to Half-Life, but I haven't read it.

I think Yorick's suggestion is probably your best bet (Half-Life was inspired by The Mist, if I remember correctly).

If you're also a fan of Marc Laidlaw's writing, check out his books as well (The 37th Mandala is creepy as hell and Kalifornia is a lot of fun to read).

If it's a dystopian mood you're looking for, then that''s a great choice.

What about 1984?

It's got nothing to do with aliens or scientists, the main character is by no means an action hero and the methods of control emposed by the state in 1984 is only superficially similar to that in HL2. That said, however, 1984 is a ****in' brilliant book, and you should definitely read it anyway.

Sigh ok, I'm think World War Z, 1984, or the Mist. which is best to read on a 35 hour drive?

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest has almost the entire concept of the Combine in it, they are even called "The Combine".

Still a really awesome discovery when you are a Half Life fan.

In terms of 'horrible incident unfolds in a closed scientific setting', Michael Crichton books like Jurassic Park and Prey are probably worth checking out.

Riddley Walker also has a lot of similarities.

I'm lying. It's just a good book that you should read.

I was thinking that Cuckoo's Nest sounds really like Foucault, and then Foucault got mentioned in the wiki article and I was like "oh, right".

Cool story, bro.
