Any convenient way to manage mp3's in Reason?

I got a question: is it possible to insert mp3's (or any audio file for that matter) as a lane? I don't know if I'm clear enough here, but last time I wanted to play a short sound, I had in mp3 format, I used Redrum and loaded it as one of the drum sounds.

Now with something bigger, like a whole music track, that I'd like to cut and play with (use a part of it, make a remix etc.), that would not be too convenient.

Well, an easy way to cut up and remix a rendered track is to load it into a program like Recycle. You could then feed it back into Reason with either Dr. Rex or an NN-XT and do what you want.

But as far as I can tell, there is no convenient internal solution.

I found this to be a pain. Dr. Rex can only handle 64 slices. And then it takes a shit long time to load. I was once trying to lay drums over an mp3, and so I wanted to put the song in, but I couldn't find a good way to do it in a way that I could easily hear what part is on the mp3 while I'm making the drums. Hmph. I would have thought Reason 4 would have an audio lane feature.

Damn, that's awkward, that should be a basic feature.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I guess your best option would be to run Reason in conjunction with another program.

Yea, Reason is a sequencer and is not made to handle audio tracks. Use rewire to use reason in conjunction with Ableton or something like Logic Express (my preference) or Pro Tools.

Load it as a sample into one of the samplers and assign it to a particular key. Then just hold that key for the length of the mp3.

Works for me.

Not exactly a convenient way to manage MP3s at all, though.

Its pretty much how you'd do things on a rack mounted sampler - which is what Reason 4 emulates.

It takes about a minute to set up. Very easy.
