i've really lost track of newer sci-fi movies.

anybody know some serious sci-fi movies? apocalyptic would be nice, but i'm open to others.

thanks

How new would you like them? Past 3 or 4 years? Past year?

Sunshine, Children of Men, 28 Days/Weeks if you think they count, EVENT HORIZON (hell yeah).

He asked for "serious" sci-fi movies, sunshine is the antithesis of serious.

He never defined what he meant by 'serious' - to me, and I presume others, I took it as a asking for a film that is very heavily scientific or sci-fi like. Without delving into what really matters in the film Sunshine, it's based primarily upon a huge ****-off spaceship that is sent on a daring mission into deep space to re-ignite the sun. I can't think of anything more so dosed in the meaning of 'sci-fi' than that, except for perhaps every other film on the planet under the genre sci-fi.

Nevertheless, the film was niether a comedy or a slapstick, and although you may disagree with what happens in the film, I'm positive Danny Boyle had all the meaning for the film to be serious in it's plot.

OH NOES
THERE WAS A CRAZY GUY IN SPACE

You know, honestly, the movie makes up for that in about every way possible, because the rest of it is pure, immaculate awesome. The psychological elements, the technology, the math behind everything, his vision of the future, it was all wonderfully done. Just because you don't like the fact that he tried to throw in a little bit of horror (which I agree was not a great decision but it worked out for those of us who aren't hyperjudgemental) doesn't devalue the rest of the movie. Aside from Pinbacker, the rest of the movie was very serious and very realistic on a lot of levels.

The future of mankind depends on this mission, right? so why the hell do they send a Benetton group of twenty somethings who can't even get along let alone work together. They're like little kids with their constant bickering. Astronauts are professionals, not whiny emo punks. This movie gives the impression that they were chosen for the mission simply because earth wanted to spend its last remaining days without them around.

"Very serious and very realistic" is just wrong on so many levels that it makes me wonder if we both saw the same film. And I'm not even going to address the third act with the slasher creep.

I see where you're coming from, but at the same time I don't think you're giving nearly enough credit to the weight of the psychological tolls that would be exerted on you in their situation.

1) They're further away from Earth than any humans (besides the failed Icarus 1 mission) had ever been.
2) They're almost certainly going to die.
3) They've been together alone for years.
4) The entire human race is depending on the success of their mission, the chances of which are slim and highly dependent on the crew.
5) The first mission failed and they don't know why.
6) For most of the movie, they're out of contact with humanity.

Even short recoil would have trouble with all that.

The Island

I don't care what any of you say. I watched the thing in theaters not knowing it was about, and the twist was shocking.

Just saw Event Horizion - bloody epic movie...

But Sunshine, Childern of Men, Pitch Black...

I'm not trying to argue with anyone, but just in the interest of the OP, I'm going to throw in my opinion: the Island was shit. The only good thing about it was Scarlett Johanssen, I'd say the rest of the movie was mediocre at best.

I'm going to watch the Island simply in the interest of being able to comment. Tis a Michael Bay movie and it will no doubt blow big time. Scarlett will make it bearable.

Sunshine is most definitely a hard science fiction movie, whether you liked it or not.

Renaissance (imagine Sin City + Blade Runner but completely animated)
Children of Men (very gritty and human)

Human's a good way to describe Children of Men. I've got Renaissance but haven't watched it yet, a big fan of rotoscoping though so I'm excited.

Children of Men is probably the best sci-fi movie out in the past few years.

Agreed 100%.
I must have missed all the psychological and mathematics that went on. Are we talking about the psychology-lite parts where they stare at the sun for no good reason? Are we talking about the maths where the maths guy ****s up his maths? Other than that it's an Armageddon action flick that doesn't even match the heroism of Willis blowing the asteroid up instead of Affleck. I didn't even care when the captain died correcting the shields because he had said about 2 words in the script so far.
But anyhow, Solaris with George Clooney gets solid enough reviews, try that out, or try the original.

Sunshine is great, 28 weeks later sucks balls! Oh, Children of Men :)

sunshine was great, and yes, 28 days later sucked like hell

and why didnt anyone mention

THE CORE
this movie ftw

because it sucks. Even more than Sunshine did.

^

Yes.

I know, let's use a few Nukes to restart something the size of Mars! That'll work!

Be warned going into this movie that, while it's quite good, most of it is really about the mood and atmosphere, and it can be very very boring.

Also Sunshine sounds like something I need to watch.

Talking of rotoscoping (Ennui reminded me) I don't know if A Scanner Darkly counts as sci-fi just because it's in the future but it is quite good.

Children of Men and 28 Days Later are brilliant. 28 Weeks Later is OK, but nowhere near as good as the first. The Core is stupid and the plot has more holes than a sponge. Haven't seen Sunshine. I haven't seen A Scanner Darkly either but the book was good.

The Core sucks donkey dick. Seriously, how did they ever manage to release it?

Oh ya,how did i forget that one?
Good movie.Lotsa twists.

Sunshine is no 2001.
It's overrated.
It's Solaris mixed with The Core.
Drags on a bit too long and it's depressing.
