The latest word is that bugs should all be squashed by August 5th or there abouts. Then a release candidate is sent to Vivendi so they can make sure it doesn't have obvious bugs, like installation problems. Most expect (hope) it to take only one or a few release candidates, then it can go gold. That would then be about one week after the first RC, the 12th let's say. The CD duplication and box manufactering takes maybe two weeks until it ships [at least, they seem to imply it will be that long; I don't know why; other games have printed in far less time]. The supposed ship date to store date can be aggravating when for some reason it doesn't show up in your area. Let's give that one week. So three weeks after gold makes it one day past the Sept. 1st day quoted by some online retailers.

Now, since this is Valve, I'll say Gabe's underestimating the time until all bugs squashed. On the other hand, 3 weeks is very long gold-to-retail turnaround time these days, especially for a high profile game. So I still say around early Sept.

Forgot to mention. This hasn't been said outright, but it seems the plan is to use the CS:S beta to catch specific hardware bugs and incorporate them, not necessarily into any RC's, but into a small patch for download in the first days of availability.

Remember that everyone has to have an internet connection to verify the game license anyway when they install, so I think Valve figures a small download offered from the start is the same as shipping a bug-free game.

So I don't think this talk of Hl2 being delayed for CS:S is likely. Maybe they'll even include installers for the other MODS that aren't finished, but won't have them playable until patches are released. They could save a lot of stress on the Steam content distribution that way.

That's false information. Noone's said you'll need an internet connection (Nor is it said in minimum/rec requierments). So why don't you dive down and learn your facts first?

Dont worry Valve will probably make sure every site knows it has gone gold. It will be a huge relief for them. Also i thought the moderators had said to quit saying things like .....closed and such. It really does get old and only assists your post count. Which in actuality means nothing at all.

We don't know yet. But if VALVe makes steam required to be run online, then I think they're dumb. It ruins it for a lot of ppl and the warez people will just bypass it and make an offline version... =/

I've searched and checked other threads, but I haven't seen a definitive response from Valve whether or not it will require internet verification. I'm guessing the cheapo SP edition for Walmart won't, but the MP enabled standard edition will.
