Back on the site after years, had to change name ect due to poor memory :S

and noticed no-one over goes on the ed and dev section anymore.

anyone know any source editing sites I can check out and be a geek at. 's been a while.

anyways, nice to be back, hi all (Y)
 
A few months ago I redownloaded a bunch of authoring tools for old HL1 and restarted my epic TFC map project. But then I got bored and gave up.

It was a rts style game set on an island where each team has a commander that can spend the resources that they collect on upgrades and such. I fleshed out the framework for resources with a really nifty binary counting system that used inactive/removed info tfgoal entities as digits. I also built an island that was surrounded by a reef. The water blended into the skybox, so it looked like the horizon went on forever. It also used an unclipped sky to visblock all of the underwater area around the island.

The commander(s) were fixed in place above the map (invisible from below) and had a birds eye view of things (caused some r_speed spikes into the 1000s). He could grab a func cannon that was centred on his view and let him shoot bombs down at the cost of spending resources.

I had a lot of other revolutionary ideas but never got around to implementing tem.
 
I was too busy working on Doom 3 and then I went to Prey just a little bit, and then to Oblivion, and was going to get into FEAR. HL2 is pretty awesome, I just never got to that. I don't think I'll have time for modding again.

I wanted to make an entire game using the Oblivion engine, well really, just a gigantic 13 level dungeon, with traps and puzzles, all unique monsters and armors, culminating with the final battle.

I was working on modified spells, effects, sound effects and graphics. I'll have to dig out picks and reminisce. I had made this zombie that was all burnt up and had particle flames.

Later on, I saw that one of those guys - OOO or someone else did a type of burning zombie too.

But the editor was a little buggy and broken, and then with updates got some things fixed but the model editor stopped working. I began to look into learning level editing, but I ended up moving from home to home for a while.

I hope that someone else does something like that, I just want to play it. DM Forever
 
Source Editing & Development died a long, painfull death.
It started of with random newcomers asking things like "my texture is purple and black ingame, it looks different in Photoshop, please help me"...
After a while the internet started bombarding us with "mod leaders looking for slaves", micro-dictator's, mod leaders, that look for shy teens, modders, to make them their favourite game... the one that doesnt exist yet.
Yorick, 6three, some others and myself tried to fight of the hordes of 'mod leaders looking for teams', smashing their entire mod concept to pieces right in front of them... I mean come on, most of them where really ****ing lame...

The internet has an amazing ability to spray an endless amount of spam, shit, mod leaders looking for teams, porn, whatever, right in your face. And as long as you keep watching your monitor, you've got your mouth wide open.

Two years ago I snapped.

Two years ago I left "Source Editing & Development" for good... never to come back.

I never messed with any of that.

I joined one forum for Doom3 and one for Oblivion.

Asking questions was almost completely useless, you just have to figure it out.

Reverse engineering people's mods is a great way to learn. ...Where does the texture go... I see.
 
By the way Dodo, do you want to join my mod team? It's a mod where Gman is your dad (Gordon) and you must go back in time with the help of Eli (?) who gives you a time machene and stop the combine invading earth and stop the resonence cascade that started the head craps and zombies from invading earth. its got good graphics and new sounds but i need a graphics artist and sound guy that can make all the new sounds, and its going to have new guns like a machene gun that shoots boms and stuff. Then mossman is also your dad so you have to kill him but he turns into a zombie so you have to kill the zombie mossman and save the earth because he secretly made the resonance cascade because he was jealous that his son got to do the experiement. I havent played halflife 1 but im pretty sure that fits with the storie.

Source is a pain in the ass to mod for. All the great and wonderful things Valve has done doesnt change the fact that their sdk and mod tools are some of the worst ever.

unrealed can go suck a cock. sure, the unreal3 dev pipeline makes source look like a bitch but goddamn it hard work builds character!

in response to the OP, nobody really posts around here anymore, although there are still plenty of regulars who are also modders/mappers. interlopers.net is definitely your best bet in terms of a source modding community. <3
 
I still enjoy crushing the occasional person's hopes for making a mod.
