any REAL working way to turn off AUTOSAVING?

I've tried everything, putting sv_autosave "0" in both my *.cfg files, which by the way only prevents autosaving after each level load and not autosaving in the middle of maps. And i've tried marking my autosave files with read only, which prevents the game from actually saving but does NOT do anything about the hitches that occur when the game tries to autosave.

Please , if someone knows a real way to just deativate the autosaving, it would be really nice.

Making the files readonly worked fine for me. I experience no more hiccups when the game tries to autosave.

Making save files read only should improve things somewhat. The stutter should be a lot smaller (hardly noticeable)

Are you sure its sv_autosave "0" ? I always thought it was autosave 0 ....anyways making save files read only is not a FULLY working fix. Donald_wong you are an idiot for suggesting it works for you.

Flyingbig hey man thanks for the tip, i have tested a lot of stuff but never actually just autosave 0. gotta try it now.

Yes I agree with you, marking the files as read only does NOTHING. If someone says it reduces the stutters, they are just imagining stuff since the stutter is just as bad as it was before.

There's no need for name calling here. If it doesn't work for you, then too bad. But it does work for a lot of other people.

Anyone confirm this?

P.S. sry about the name calling, just bothers me when people come up with these magic solutions that only work for them ;) Its all in your head mate.

donald_wong_ooha I don't want to sound disrespectful , but I am very confident with that those people are trying out this trick, and then when they play they have decided even before it stutters that it runs much better. It's called the placeaboo effect (i think) and I can remember many threads when Doom 3 came out about how you would get "an incredible FPS boost" if you added some nonsense to the command line or cfg file. And then it was proven many times that it made no difference.

This made no difference to me, and as a realist i can see why since the game still have to do the autosave procedures and it still tries to acess the hard drive e.t.c. with the only difference being that it cannot actually write to the files.

What I'm looking for is a fix that removes the game's autosave, since even if Valve does fix this studdering sounds bug the ecessive amount of autosave points causing severe annoyance is still going to be there, and the gaming experience will still be quite butchered.. In the early stages of the game it's ok but when you get to the last chapters there are autosave points everywhere and either someone has to edit the maps to remove them or Valve may be kind enought to tell us how to disable autosave. Please Valve, include Autosave as an OPTION in some future patch.

EDIT: is there some e-mail adress i can mail to, i saw that some people got responses from Valve about the stuttering. This autosaving is seriously destroying my gaming experience with this otherwise excellent game.

I'll believe you that it doesn't work for you if you'll believe me that it's not a placebo effect. :) Making the files readonly really does work for me. What used to be up to 5 seconds of screen freezing and audio looping during autosaves is now just a split second hiccup.

Thank you, at last he admits it doesn't magically stop the game from stuttering, lmao! Evidence if ever there was that don't believe what you read on forums especially solutions that magically fix everything. Donald if you had read this guys post you would have noticed that he was looking for a REAL solution suggesting that he wants a fix that REALLY solves the autosave problem, not a half arsed solution. Anyway, i'll not hold it against ya big fella ;)

I think going from 5 seconds to a split second is a perfectly fine fix. However, I was disputing HamsterErik's claim that "marking the files as read only does NOTHING". It definitely does something and it does something huge. Anyway, I'm tired of discussing this. If it doesn't work for you, too bad. I'm going back to playing more HL2.

Geez... why not give Donald a break here.

Hate to tell ya boys... he *is* correct on *one* of the stuttering issues: the microstutter during an autosave. No... its NOT the "major" stuttering problem people are having in the game.... but some of us have absolutely had this microstutter caused by the autosave and it ain't a "placebo effect" either.

Case and point... I'm pretty confident my rig can handle this game without a hiccup and am running it flawlessly at 1600x1024 on my 24" widescreen monitor. Smooth as butter.... even with Reflect All on a heavy water level like Water Hazard.

However, I was getting microstutter which I completely, 100% isolated to the autosave by saving right before it happened and then repeating it over and over again.

[POTENTIAL SPOILER WARNING - End of Highway 17 Mission]

When in the Lighthouse, I saved the game just one RPG away from blowing the gunship out of the sky. Right in the middle of the gunship explosion in mid-air, I get three microstutters in quick succession. Why?? Surprise! An autosave takes place right in the middle of the flippin' explosion!

Tried shutting off Autosave with Autosave 0 etc., but the console kept showing the save and the microstutter continued.

I then read Donald's post, changed all four Autosave files to read only, reloaded the level, and now during the mid-air explosion, the total microstutter is about half of one microstutter instead of three full ones. Thanks Donald!

Not a chance in hell any of you would talk like that to someone face to face.... why be rude here??

Sorry, it doesn'y fully fix the problem, thats why this post was created. Changing your save files to read only is old news and the poster was fully aware of that. Anyway, back to waiting for vavle to release the patch, hoping autosave is one of the features they FIX.

Flying big is correct, the read only tricks only helps a bit, it still stutters though and I still find it annoying. If you dont thats fine, but shouldnt there be a way to make it so the game just doesnt autosave. I really dont understand why they went so crazy with the save points. At some points its literally every 10-20 seconds, its rediculous. Nothing I've found so far works entirely

Marking read only works for me, but isn't the real way to solving the problem because every time I want to save normally (or quick save) the game crash.

Make sure you mark all 4 files as read only.
