This may have been brought up before, (maybe even by me i dont remember,)
But is there any reason that its called "Half Life"? Is there anything behind it? Or did Valve just want to be cool? (Because the name is cool, obviously)

Please, Please, dont hold back to state your opinions.

Google the scientific term for half-life and you'll see.

The vote for "Because it was a scientific game that had hazardous waste everywhere, and they wanted to have a name that was very catchy."

So this is why they named it that?-

half-life (hflf, häf-)
n.

1. Physics. The time required for half the nuclei in a sample of a specific isotopic species to undergo radioactive decay.
2. Biology.
1. The time required for half the quantity of a drug or other substance deposited in a living organism to be metabolized or eliminated by normal biological processes. Also called biological half-life.
2. The time required for the radioactivity of material taken in by a living organism to be reduced to half its initial value by a combination of biological elimination processes and radioactive decay.

hey... i think i understand now!!!! YAY!!!

I thought it was also a fitting description of the decay of the military command structure (HL) and society under the Combine (HL2).

Various reasons.
It's generally related to the scientific theme running throughout the series.
It was at the time very realistic, in most respects, compared to other FPSes, coming closer to realistic simulation of life. Hence the game is half of real-ife.
Also (random thoughts ahead:) perhaps Freeman, with his destiny being controlled by the G-Man since some point during the BM incident, only has half a life?

In the "making of" story on gamespot they said they chose the name just out of coolness.

xzeox... Really... Forum is stuffed with "Why Half-Life" threads. :|

Becuase weve wasted half our lives on it.

in Raising the bar you can read that they where trying to get both a sci-fi feeling and a mature feeling to show that they where not just another shooting game. They looked at Half-Dead and a hundreds diffrent name but they chose half-life :)

ALSO very importantly, Half-Life is what scientist, for a joke, call the guys experimenting on Half-Life in real life if u know what imean. the guys in orange HEV suits in real life call themselves half-life. wat a sense of humour.

They called it half-life because it takes half a life to make a new game. :upstare:

Uh, come again?

The scientists that make experiments in real life, are sometimes called Half-Life's as a joke. That good enough?

now think about blue shift, opposing force, decay and aftermath... very very clever names.
