i need tips..such as buying the right ram for the right motherboard...and so on, damn i feel so newbie , but i gotto ask

Cant give any tips without knowing what it is exactly you want... Or we would sit and write a 20 pages long essay :)

theres a good article on gamespy.com about building an entry pc, or an extreme gamer pc.

dont know where it is on the site though.

tip1:
plug everything in, turn it on and pray.

tip2:
if you want any proper advice we need to know the basics from you like what CPU do you want to use?

research, research, research....the web is a wonderful thing. Part Numbers also work beautifully in search engines.

find something that looks good to you. Note the name or part number. Put them in a search engine and read. Then do the same with alternatives. spend time to do this with every part you consider. sounds a chore but is worth it in the end. that way you won't end up with an Nvidia type problem

set a budget and then go to newegg.com or pricewatch.com and find some shnizzit. i've built 3 comps and it's pretty easier. like playing with legos. back in the old days...

Um, well I would recommand a Intel machine right now. Get an Intel processor that is a "C" which means it has a 800mhz fsb(good) and they come in 2.4ghz, 2.6, 2.8, 3.0, 3.2 batches...I would recommand a Abit IC7-G Max 3 motherboard and make sure you get memory that's dual channel. Atleast 512mb of PC3200. ;)

IC7 Max 3 is useless unless OCing. Just stick with the Abit IS7 or IC7 max II versions.

I'd recommend an Athlon XP 2600 and an Asus AN78X Deluxe. Cheap, fast and feature packed. don't waste your money on expensive pentiums. Its the graphics card that makes the difference

Thanks for showing how smart you are.

what i was trying to point out was this, if hes building a machine to play Halflife 2 then whats the point of spending a fortune buying a 3.2Ghz MT Pentium. He'd be better buying a more value based processor and spending his money on a better card. On a 2600+ with a 9800np he'll get about 5500 on 2003 3D Marks, not a bad score. Uping the processor speed will not push that score up astronomicaly. He'll be doing alot better than if he'd spent his money on a huge Pentium leaving himself only enough for a shit card that would top out no where near that. Balance is what it's called, living in the real world of budgets.

Anyone agree.

i would suggest make sure you buy warranties for all your parts... the first time my friend built a pc his power supply shorted out and his chip was bad... make sure you get stuff insured/warranty... and buy a book on how to build a computer... lots of pictures help.. it helped me when i first started.... read everything 2 or 3 times when setting up the motherboard... and last but not least if all else fails... there are plenty of resource sites that can help you with all your problems...
