I was fine with being called son, it was obviously a term of endearment used to show that he and Freeman have a relationship. His respect for you is what leads him to believe that you'd make a good partner for his beloved daughter, so he's not exactly saying 'go on son, wear her in'.

Anyway, I think he calls him son for those reasons, but also simply because he's old. I'm sure most of you admins know what I'm talking about..
