I've been tossing the idea around about getting a tattoo, and as of yet, the only creative thing I've come up with is two drumsticks in a cross on the outside of my bicep, over a fretboard that goes up my arm, from elbow to shoulder, with the outside of a drum going around my arm, since I play drums and guitar almost out of need. This would be on my right arm, too, since I'm right handed, perhaps some of my lyrics written above, or below the drumsticks, that I pick out that really mean something to me. But I don't want to just jump into that, because I'm young, and my ideals might change, and I may not even want a tattoo in the future, but right now I think it would be cool.

Also, if you're thinking about getting one, you should really consider what this guy says, and maybe even talk to him.

So, I made this thread to consult other tattoo interested individuals, and maybe share some stories, or tattoo meanings. It truly is art.

so you've decided to do this:

that's a hell of a regret to make: "oops I changed my mind!"

I suggest you get something about the same size as this:

no big regrets if you change your mind. make sure you shade the flying hornless unicorn a bright shade of pink

also that fat guy in the video is really ugly; decorating his body with things that distract from his ugliness is probably a smart thing to do

Good: "This symbol/picture/word/phrase/quote/etc has always meant a lot to me, so I think I'll get it tattooed on my body"
Bad: "I want a tattoo, what should I get?"

Don't reverse the process. Don't get a tattoo just to have a tattoo.

Especially not that god awful monstrosity you just described.

I don't think I'd take advice of any kind from that guy.

That's why I'm waiting. I've talked about it for a while, and that was just something I thought would be neat, more so for me, maybe not for Vegeta's sake. ;)

But, as I said, my ideals might change. If anything I'll get one when I've had kids, and get my kids names cryptically tattooed on me, like Scary Dave did. And don't be dissin on Scary Dave. He may not be the best looking 50 year old guy out there... but... he's... Like... 50...

I'm not dumb enough to just jump into it, which is part of the reason I made this thread. I've been thinking about getting one for a while, and I wanted to see what other people had gotten, or hear some other people's ideas for tattoos that they've been thinking about, that way I can figure out what I want, or if I even want one at all.

If you think that getting people's names tattooed on you is even remotely a good idea, then you're hopelessly lost to bad taste. Tattooing your kid's names on you is ****ing weird.

I'll say two things about tattoos: they hurt like hell and you should start small.

Also, tribal tattoos are bland and unimaginative. The best tattoo I ever saw was Elliot on his bike with ET upfront. Not detailed but just an outline of the silhouette.

I wouldn't mind a tattoo, but I've never found anything I'd want in my skin for the rest of my life so never bothered getting one.

Who are you to say that it's bad taste? What if I want to be reminded what I fight for? Why I wake up and deal with the bullshit in the world every day? Everyone's taste is different, and I wouldn't necessarily get their names tattooed on me, I'd have my own idea for it, something about each of them, maybe something that symbolizes their names, or something that they do that I want to be reminded of. It all depends on life experiences, and so far, I have no desire to rest on anything, or get a tattoo in the next few years. It's not something to take lightly by any means, but it's something I like to think about.

No, it's really not.

So many people have tatoos these days that it's not a statement of individuality anymore, it's conforming to some bullshit idea of what's cool or rebellious. Whenever I see a someone walking around covered in tats it reminds me parents who've let their kids draw on the walls in their house. Love your skin - don't draw shit on it.

and you're just dumb.

I was going to get something, but I'm going to give it maybe a year and see if I still want it. Was thinking about getting a wolf pack, each wolf being one of my family members, trouble is I'm that skinny and pasty I don't really have anywhere to put it.

Well jesus, if you can't remember who you fight for without having a tatoo of them, then by all means. You might want to go to a doctor though, I think they can help with your memory problems.

@ Pi: I think its really weird. I wouldn't want anybody to have my name tattooed on their body. Or even anything "symbolic" of me. Thats ****ing weird. Its like a less psycho, more easily hidden version of having a wall full of voyeur photos of somebody.

been tossing around the idea for years, still not settled on a design, which will be my own of course. taking it pretty seriously.

also i have no money

I didn't mean it as something so simple, Krynn. The tattoo isn't supposed to be something simple. It's supposed to be something with a deep meaning behind it TO THE INDIVIDUAL. I'm tattooing my skin, not yours, so why would I want to get something you thought was cool, and I thought had nothing to do with me? I'd rather get something that you thought was shitty, that I thought was cool, and had something to do with my life. It's in the eye of the beholder, and the least you can do as an individual in the art section of the forum is see it through another individual's eyes. It's not necessarily about remembering "OH, SHIT, RIGHT, I HAVE KIDS!" It's more about being reminded that whoever matters to you isn't just a thought in the back of your head. My girlfriend's dad is having all 5 of his children draw something that has meaning to them, and he's getting it tattooed on his arm. He's in his 60's, and it'll be his first tattoo, but it's of his kids, for his kids, as a reminder of his kids. When they move out, he'll have a piece of them with him in his heart, and on his arm, where he can see it. Something about them. He'll remember the battles and laughs he had raising them and such.

It's no different than drawing a picture on paper, only that you're going to look at it forever when you see yourself in the mirror, and that's why you get it, because it serves to remind you life has some meaning for you. Some people float through life not realizing what they have, and some of us want to make sure we never forget, so we get something related to it tattooed on. Something that has meaning to me that will go on my skin to remind me of who I am. So I will see my image, and on my image I will see a representation of something about me so I remember just why the **** I do what the **** I do, or for some people, it's a reminder as to why they should even bother breathing. Would it be weird to you if one of your parents wanted to get something related to you tattooed on them to remind them of you when you're away? Pictures are one thing, but they don't go with you everywhere.

So, to you, someone else's tattoos might look like a 3 year old's drawings, but if it holds some meaning to them, that's not your place to judge. Rather, you should wonder if they have any meaning behind them, and what that could be. Try being open minded about it. Some of the nicest, coolest people I've ever met had tattoos. Some pretty cool one's too. Not some picture up in a parlor, but something they thought on for months, or years. And that's what it should be, and that's why I made this thread.

Just remember that 60 years from now your skin won't be all nice and tight like it is now. Thats why sometimes when I see people with like butterflies or something artsy I just envision in my mind 60 years from now what that wrinkly butterfly will look like.

I still don't understand why you'd need a tattoo to remind yourself of anything. If people are important to you, then you won't need any form of a reminder of that fact. I also never said anything about the quality of the tattoo, or what it is. The thought that my dad would have a tattoo about me on him is weird, as I said before. Maybe its simply because I'm not a lovey-dovey touchey feely type of person, but that would make me feel very uncomfortable if someone told me they're getting a tattoo about me. I'd be all "wut da fuk? dats gay"

In a horrible world where your choices are entirely driven by cultural trends...

I've thought about it, but it's the kind of thing I doubt I'll ever do. Vegeta's got a good point about having a reason to get a tattoo. So many people think once they're 18 it's just OH SHIT, TIME TO GET AS MANY HOLES AND DESIGNS IN MY BODY AS POSSIBLE.

And Krrrrn, different people express themselves in different ways. I don't think many people tattoo themselves as actual reminders, you be takin' that shit too literally. It's a physical manifestation of something important to you. I don't need a picture to remember something, but that doesn't stop me from seeing old pictures and smiling. A tattoo is like a picture, only it's also a commitment, not like hanging something on the wall.

And yeah, I think I would hate that tattoo you're talking about OP.

Some guy at my work got the Blink 182 Smiley face when he turned 18. A month later he got a tribal one.

uuuggghhh.

my friends all went to get tattoos one day and invited me, i declined and from what i see i didn't like theirs. it made no sense, just a big waste of money. someday i may get one, like a year before the end of the world or something but i just see it as a big waste of money

He's never going to regret that, ever.

My most recent one, for the record. Obviously, nothing original, but just my bullshit attempt at being cool and rebellious.

I remember when we went over the planning for that one. It's still pretty cool, and has meaning.

its the ****ing women that get butterflies or stupid sayings that tick me off

Look everybody, Krynn has a differentiating opinion.

I plan to get my arms sleeved eventually, though it's going to take months of good designing and even more months of constant staring (at the design of course) before I decide to have it permanently embedded in my skin.

I wasn't aiming to touch a nerve. I didn't know you had a tattoo. If there's a symbol or design that's particularly meaningful to someone and they think it'll look good, then who gives a **** what other people think.

In a horrible world where your choices are entirely driven by cultural trends...

That's just it. At the gym I go to nearly everyone has a tattoo. You can date people by when they had them done. Bar codes, barbed wire bands, asian/arabic text, sleeves everywhere. One guy has part of his family tree written in arabic. There's a girl with stunningly milky white vampire like skin and she's got little stars and cartoon animals dotted about on it. wtf.

I still consider this to be one of the greatest tattoos I have laid eyes on. Elegant, meaningful, unique, and touching.

Man you guys are lame. And tattoos are cool. "Ooooh, your tattoo isn't 100% original! Why you ****ing conformist! Think your a rebel?" No, it looks ****ing cool. And it got me ****ing laid. So there.

jesus.

Rizzo is trying to convince himself he doesn't regret his tattoo.

That dolphine feelt like such a good idea at the time man!

Totally worth it.

Well, it's not like it's the last idea I'll ever have for one. It's actually the first. I like Pi's tat, though, cause I look at it, and have no idea what it means, but it looks cool. So I would be inclined to ask him, and find out something about him just by him explaining the meaning. That's what I want, if I want one. :p

"What are my kids' names again?"

*looks at arm*

"Oh yeah! Billy, Joe, Anna, and Christine!"

Since you own a Wii I guess I can assume you're a 35+ year old soccer mom who knows nothing about video games? Just because some people get tattoos for the wrong reason and other people don't get tattoos for the wrong reason, but that doesn't mean everybody has to.

While I feel this might be a poor example of the tattoo having demographic, thinking your tattoo looks ****ing cool and getting laid are perfectly respectable motivations for doing something.

I believe each circle is representative of one of his children and that the design somehow indicates when they were born.

That's correct.

Also, on my other wrist:

Which is a stylised version of my family tree.

I'm for tattoos being a representation on what you truely believe or something you cherish.

Everything else, graffiti.
