Anyone else wish Valve would have remained silent?

hehheh ho ho ahahahhah

Sorry but this thread is funny.... well the latest posts anyway....

Blaming valve for getting a new system... LOL

I bought a new system, i am disapointed that hl2 isnt out in time to run it. But it will still run on it when it does come out. And very well at that. Just the same as if it had come out on time. Which means no loss for me.

Plus you just cant legally blame ANYONE for making a legitamate puchase, especially since you didnt buy the rig from valve. They got nothing. They meant no harm. And they are not liable.

Now, its late. I am tired (As shown by unorganised post) and you cant just say your right. Because your not.

Night Night all! :)

I won't reply cause it'll be "off-topic" and the ignorance that some of you show is hilarious. But to stay on topic, I'll say again, this was a very unprofessional handling of the situation. I'm pretty sure we could've been notified sometime before the actual delay. There should be serious consequences for horrible PR.

I work at a retail store... on one of the motos they put up is this. "we are not doing the customer a favor, they are doing us a favor by shopping here"

I like this line, because it really puts into perspective what a company should be doing.

i think the gaming industry has gotten lazy, they think they are doing us a favor by making these games. while infact it is the customer who is doing them a favor by buying the game.

The reason that Valve can act they way it does is because it has power over its customers. they can have no PR, they can say one thing, and do another... and people will buy the game. However this can not last forever. people only tolerate this sort of behavior from a company that in the end provides a good fix. as soon as valve cant give gamers that fix anymore its dead. when you play the game like they do, you cant mess up.

lets take Raven for example. they have made some not very good games, but they can live though it because they are consistent. they tend to do what they say, and just because you dont like this game, the next one might be to your liking.

Say Valve only sells 1,000 copys of its game.... do you think the company would survive? No, like i said, as soon as they strew up, and don't have a fun game for us at the end of the day, people wont put up with their crap anymore.

Great Post.

I can't help thinking that maybe Valve shouldn't have mentioned the game at all until finalisation. Seriously, they'd have been heralded as the saviours of the gaming world if they'd slated the game for Q1 2004- presuming their *ahem* rivals didn't beat them to it. An early release? Simply maintains and strengthens community faith. And yes, despite considering myself a blatant fanboy I am still bitter regarding the truly pathetic handling of the whole September 30th fiasco.

Still, I like to think that the main priority here is quality. I'd like to think I could last past April if it meant playing a superior game, although god knows whats going on right about now.

It's EXACTLY what I think...I'm disapointed about the delay, but I'll live with it...it's the way Valve handled the situation that pissed me off, and still does.

Exactly, its not the delay that pissed me off, the handling of the whole situation is horrible.

And in those quotes I never said a Release date is a contract, put on some glasses. Please look further into my "quotes" to find the answers to your questions for I will not go on to repeat the examples I already gave.

You can not give a release date unless you are sure its being released, or you give a reasonable amount of time before you delay. Its very unprofessional and ethical and thats what it comes down to. This is a huge PR **** up, and **** ups deserve punishment.

Why is quotes in quotes?

But anyway, I'm just gonna say I refuse to continue a discussion with someone who won't make a logical response and doesn't respond to any of the points I brought up. I can't very well make a point if there is no one to make a counter point. So, cheers OFFMason, you can keep your opinion and I can keep mine. We can just leave it at that.

Ok, back to the topic:

In some ways I think it would have been nice for valve to keep silent about the game. But I also enjoy watching the videos and browsing the current HL2 forums, which I wouldn't be able to do if they had. It's not a big deal to me when they release it so I would have to say I happier to know about it than I would be not knowing anything.

Yeah... silence would've meant a lack of media, obvious as it sounds. Occasionally I watch all the vid's again just to try and rekindle the want... man, I'm sad.

Overall it probably would've made far more sense to have either given no date, or an unbelievably adaptive date (although not quite 2006 :cheese: ).

Release date a legal issue? Ethical...?!

I think its best just to consider it a "not very nice thing" to keep your community in the dark... unless there's some sort of publicly hidden contract there's no real case and "immoral" is too strong a term. It's just not very nice to announce a delay less than a week from the slated date.

Well, I didnt even quote the right person...I have problems with those "Quotes" buttons, they seem misplaced. Anyway, I wanted to quote "iamaelephant" when he said that it was the way Valve handled the situation that pissed off poeples.

No, your points are questions that I've already answered and you are too lazy to look thoroughly enough to find them. If you can't understand my legal description, I'm not going to dumb down my explinations. It is how it is, that is law. I've explained it to my sister and her friends who are lawyers, they think its definitely possible.

Look, as I said earlier I am NOT discussing it with you anymore as it's pointless, so drop it. Oh, and I don't appreciate being called ignorant, lazy, and a fool, and there's no need to further explain your legal description, I'm perfectly capable of understanding what you wrote. Also, if you want to disagree with me then that's your right, but why do you resort to name calling and insulting my intelligence? Is that truly necessary? I respect your decision to not be swayed from your own opinions, so why don't you respect what I think as well? Now, I have no wish to get this topic locked and I'm sure everyone else is just as tired of this argument as I am. So, again, cheers OFFMason, and I hope you have a pleasent day.:)

This is Valve's style. They did it with HL1.

They delayed it, scrapped it started again, then released it.

I wasn't around for the original HL1 hype, but I can imagine it being much like this.

I wonder if there's any forums still in existance that contains the type of community we've had here?

Obviously it'd be a lot smaller but I can just imagine it to be just like this one.

This is definetly way worse, there's so much more fan base now.

"For all your boasting of such a great legal knowledge I have yet to see a truly valid argument in support of your opinion that a release date is a legally binding contract, implying that the company can be held legalily responsible for failure to meet said release date."

When you show me enough respect to read my messages clearly and ask why I said things that I never said then maybe I'll consider treating you with respect.

Every question you've asked, I've answered. Just because you don't comprehend what I've said doesn't mean I haven't presented a valid point, what it shows is that you can't put together what I've said in your head, as you've clearly demonstrated.
