i saw a new screen a few days ago it was a in game picture where your standing in what looks like a old bathroom and your facing three regular ant lions but you can see the normal maps on the ant lions and how they are reflective. i know this shot wasn't from the beta because my cuz who played the beta said those features weren't in there yet. if anyone has it can they link me?

thanks that screenshot is amazing, the normal mapping, specular mapping and lighting just adds a whole new level is immersiveness.

Pitbul being POSITIVE towards HL2.. it.. it's so beautiful
/me sheds a tear of joy

I think the shadows in Source suck. The rest of the shot is very nice, though. :)

I'd like to see Source with Dynamic Shadows. Just to see what its like. But other then that i'm happy with the graphics

Yeah if your going to do some screenies put the AA up to 16 and same with AF!

its not so much HL2 that i had a problem with just VALVe's shady ways that sometimes turned me off as the consumer. but it seems as we get closer they seem to be opening up and trying harder, that and im happy that i can beta test CS:S with my HL2 voucher. :D

To be honest I think the shot looks pretty ugly. The flashlight effect and the room look alright, but I don't like the models at all, nor the lighting or shadows.

Don't get me wrong, I think HL2 in general looks great. I just don't like this one screenshot at all.

AA is terrible. It's like adding a gaussian blur over the screen. Awful, imho. 2x AA is bearable, but no more.

Sweet screen! Can't wait to see how it looks ingame!

Old screen, but still nice to look at. IMO i always leave AA off cause it only makes lag and i dont notice a difference in the visuals.

Those antlions look different than the ones in other screenies and the bink vids. The colors are different (maybe the flashlight makes it appear that way). Did they always have eyes? Maybe antlions come in different flavors like headcrabs.

I think what Sushi ment was that he cant wait to play the game and see it INGAME while playing. :D

I hope Valve puts in dynamic shadows for an upcoming Source update. It's the only thing that bugs me with the engine. Other than that it looks spectacular, the antlions' shells are so detailed, they have ridges on them :E

Does Half-Life 2 support dynamic shadows like Doom 3?

Gabe Newell: Yes, we have dynamic shadows. We use a different approach than Doom3.

Everyone should read the Q&A

Well, hopefully Half Life 2 implements the dynamic shadows before release because as it stands, most of the shadow's aren't effected by other lightsources introduced into the scene via flashlight or whatever else. And hopefully they fixed that crane scene where, the crane had no shadow, and the shadow of the magnet appeared on the ground even though the box it was lifting up should have been the only shadow. Valve said this doesn't affect gameplay, but i strongly disagree, it totally takes me out of the moment, and ruins the atmosphere.

It's not nearly the same thing as D3 though. There's no unified lighting model so you get some weird bugs. But you can do soft shadows, so it's a tradeoff. But as soon as computers are able to use D3's method and do soft shadows HL2's method will be obsolete.

Per-pixel lighting would be nice, too, although the engine wouldn't be nearly as well optimized for lower end machines as it is.

BTW:

Its not the flashlight that is making them look different, it appears as tho they totally re-did the skins.. yay.

Shadows are all wrong....shouldn't the flashlight be projecting Ant Lion shadows on the floor and wall?

I'm not sure how you think it's really any better optimized than D3 at this point..

HL2's minimum specs:
1.2 GHz Processor
256MB RAM
DirectX 7 level graphics card

D3's minimum specs:
1.5GHz P4 or equivalent
512MB RAM
Geforce4 Ti4800 or Radeon 9500

There's not a huge difference anymore, sadly (although, the graphics cards are quite the difference.. BUT.. if it can run on a GF4MX, I don't see how the minimum could be a 9500? ..).. =(

Go see Vampires: the masquearde - bloodlines video 4, it has dynamic shadows that change with the light source.

Funny, valve didn't add them to their own game though.

Ugh, we really don't need another thread discussing exactly the same stuff as before. Closed.
