I assume "General Gaming" includes other forms of games as well? ;)

Anyway, just wondering if any of you guys play Magic or have played in the past. I was surprised when I realized recently that I haven't seen any posts about this. Considering how popular the game has become I'm sure there are bound to be some players here.
If so, when did you start/stop and why? Any opinions of the game?

As for myself, I started around Ice Age and played casually (read: newbie games) with friends for a while. I got into playing a few tournaments and making some decent decks. Took a break during Urza's block (of course I had to choose to stop during the most broken block ever :p) and stopped again during Onslaught -> Mirrodin. I have recently started playing again, and I play in FNM (Friday Night Magic) about every other week at my local comic shop as well as playing with friends.

Back when I used to play more I kind of studied the rules by reading questions at MTGNews's ruling forum. I still have a pretty good understanding of them and I still find it very interesting to read all the crazy situations that come up.

To anyone who doesn't play and is interested:
IMO it is a very, very fun game. I actually enjoy playing Magic more than many PC games I own. Chances are there is a comic/hobby store near you where you can buy cards and play with people. Just a warning, though: Buying a few cards to play with friends is fun, but if you really want to get into the game and make some tournament-worthy decks you have to be willing to spend a lot of time mastering the game and a fair amount of money to buy cards. I still highly recommend this game. Although many players are kids, there are plenty of adults who play as well. It's a great way to meet new people and spend your time waiting for HL2. :D

Comments? :)

I used to play years ago... still have the cards in a box somewhere... never seriously in any tournaments or anything, but it was fun! The best part was actually putting together a unique deck. :)

I used the play when the Revised Edition came out, up until about the Ice Age and Homelands expansions years ago. All the new expansions are just too crazy though and the game just has too different of a feel than it used to. I understand that they've gotta keep it going with fresh ideas but all the new abilities get just plain tedious and annoying sometimes.

Still have all my cards though, and some pretty damn good ones at that too.

EDIT: and no expansion is worst than the Fallen Empires set. Good God what a waste of money.

i had used to play with my friend's black death with all the poisoning intants and such, what type of decks do are your guy's expertise?

btw, i haven't played in years but i was wondering if goblin grenades were still legal in tournaments

Of course Goblin Grenades are legal (in Type I format of course)... they may be useful in Goblin decks, but there's nothing broken about them. ;) I doubt there are many Type I Goblin decks anyway... Trust me, there are many FAR more broken cards since then.

I agree that some of the newer abilities/mechanics are dumb or annoying, and yes, the game has changed quite a bit. I do like a lot of the new stuff though; I think it makes the game more intersting, adds a lot more variety, and end the end makes it more fun.

I agree, but you might want to have a talk with Sai about that...

Here is one of my favorite decks (also one of the most successful). It is fun to play, and I have been tweaking it a lot lately.

CREATURES(19):
4x Birds of Paradise
4x Nimble Mongoose
4x Blurred Mongoose
3x Blastoderm
4x Mystic Snake

COUNTER(8):
4x Mana Leak
4x Counterspell

BOUNCE(7):
4x Temporal Spring
3x Sunken Hope

CARD DRAWING(6):
4x Accumulated Knowledge
2x Standstill

LANDS(20):
4x Yavimaya Coast
7x Forest
9x Island

Basically I play a few untargetable creatures and attack with them early while controlling the board. Eventually I lay down a Sunken Hope or two which combos nicely with my Blastoderms and Mystic Snakes. I love the Standstills because after I get an early advantage they screw my opponent. ;) [btw: You can look up any of the other cards by typing in the name here.]

This is one of my more serious decks, although I have many other that I use mainly for casual play.

Two things about Magic.

1. Too many people at my school are hooked on it.

2. Those peices of card are very expensive.

I started playing during the Tempest block, but my intrest waned with Mercidian Masques. It has picked up recently with Mirrodin. Magic is a great game, very simple yet complex.

I played a long time ago, I just used my brother's cards. Then I bought a huge box with 2 other friends for a total of $60 ($20 each)...we got tons of cards and we split them up. Just recently for no apparent reason...we decided to play again... I played last night.

It's been a while...but one of my friend's and I had an argument. He has a card that deals 2 damage to each player that casts a spell. He was claiming that Artifacts aren't spells...and I was saying everything but land and abilities are spells.
