I'm tired of every headset I buy, that stops working in one ear and only works in the other after a while. This is always caused even with no abuse, and just age. It's not even a year old purchased from the store, and it stops working. Why do they do this? Is there some way I can crack it open and fix the connection?

Its technically possible to do, but its often as fiddly as hell. Aside from anything else, the damn things are usually glued together, so even if you get them apart, you have to mess about sticking the back together.

However, if your determined, crack them open (Brute force tends to work if they are glued, just try to open it along the seam) and look for lose wires. Once you find it/them, figure out where they go (If its not obvious, you will need the design scematics, which the manufacturors will not give you, natch) and solder them back into place. If you just use the cheapish jobs, you'll be better off buying a new set, they are not worth the hassle usually.

stop buying crap headsets then :)

my top tip would be to buy a Sennheiser PC150 or PC155 as ive had one for 14 months now without it dying on me even though i give it more abuse then i should.

If you live by a Compusa, get a headset from them and buy their replacement plan. Anything goes wrong it's an over-the-counter replacement and if you wish you can buy a better headset next time and pay the difference.

I'm pretty sure they have some Sennheiser headsets.
