It takes forever to download on my connection at home so i am wondering if anyone knows where an alternate source is for it so i can download it at school. thanks for any help.

No, it's through Steam only. See if you can't get someone else with Steam and a faster connection to download it for you and pass on the GCFs.

it is only 260MB. Cue it up while you at school. When ya get home it will be done.

Well, maybe he has ISDN which would still take him hours, not to mention the costs of having the connection on for all that time...

Sneakily install Steam at school and burn the gcf's.

With the cd burner you sneakily build in.
Seriously, Valves pet steam is cool and so, but they really need to provide an alternative. See this guy, obviously he hasnt got a broadband connection. He bought the retail (so that he hadn't have to download) and now he still needs to download 'just' 260 mb. That takes forever man!
Now fortunately, his school had broadband, so he wants to download it there, but he cant without steam.

Having to download every patch, mod, upgrade or app via steam only costs valve bandwith. Back in the old days you couldnt even download it from valve, it had to come from mirrors like fileplanet and such.
Being able to download this via steam is nice as an alternative, but its stupid to make it the only place.

yah 260MB is crazy huge for a dialup connection. cant believe people are still using phone lines for internet :p

Lots of places have cd burners these days (even our place does). Or use a USB key, or whatever.

Couldn't agree with you more.

DSL connections run thru phone lines and outside USA DSL:s are the most common broadband connections used :)

I am on dialup too and its the only option in my small town. Yes right here in california USA there IS NO BROADBAND! Tons of people are still on dialup and it sucks that we are forced to use steam and download all these patches. I used to just go to school and download patches and files to my 512mb flash drive. No more thanks to steam.

You can still do it - transfer the .qcf files (those are the caches) and everything should work just fine. Of course you need to install Steam on your school's computer (so don't remember to logout after using it!)

Still, I'm amazed there isn't some guy on Ebay or something selling complete gcf caches for $5-10 or something.
