Has anyone tried fixing the 3 red lights error on the 360?

I know Microsoft has extended the warrenty to 3 years (so mines covered) but I've also had a mate that sent his away 3 months ago and still hasn't got it back...

Everything seems to point to this guide as being the best (http://xbox360redlightfix.com/) but paying for it... $39 what the hell? It also appears to be a bit of a scam as every google results for "fix 3 light error" or whatever seems to bring up sites pointing to that one, all with amazing reviews saying that it worked perfectly. I'm also not realy persuaded by the fact that when you try to leave the site they knock off $5 in a popup... just screams scam to me.

What ya reckon then guys? Just send it away?

I have a couple of friends who whave used the towel method with great success. For one it was just a temporary option, for the other it fixed it.

supposedly, wrapping it in a warm towel fixes it temporarily,I don't know first hand but people both on Xbox Live and a few friends say it works.

Use your warranty, if you bought a two year one.

If not, I suggest warm towel first, fix-age later.

A fix you say? How about not buying another 360 if it breaks on you again? :|

Srsly, if people who've had consistent trouble with red-ring and breakdowns would suddenly just stop buying 360s all together, Microsoft would get the point and release an improved model that won't break down every other week, and maybe even offer victims of red-ring the new and improved, non burn-in factory/engineering error model as to not scare of the established 360 owner base. :p

This would definately work as it is a very common M$ foul-up many people have had trouble with.

Futhermore, video games are just too lucrative a business for M$ to pass up, so if every red-ring/breakdown victim just up and quit spending money on 360 stuff, and 360 sales suffered because of it, chances are M$ is not going to simply drop out of the console race. They'll more than likely fix the problem.

Remember, you vote with your wallet, and your basically giving the OK to M$ for their flawed hardware everytime you people buy your fifth or sixth 360. Why can't you red-ring victims understand this?

I may eventually get a 360 when they stop making them get the RROD. But I guess ill just stick to PC for the next few years, since it seems they're in no hurry to fix their console.

Chances are he already has a Wii. And the PS3 game library is less than stellar, compared to the 360 right now.

Not unless you have a high-end PC, (not saying I do, mine's fairly mid-range actually) in which case these owners already have access to much of the 360's library. :p

Send it off. As much as it sucks waiting, I wouldn't even risk voiding my warranty for a quick fix. Personally I've never had to wait more than a month, usually not more than 1-2 weeks to get it back.

So yeah, do it now if you want to be playing GTA IV on release. :)

I bought the thing just over 2 years ago and not had a single problem with it. Not even the disk read errors some people were getting with Halo 3.

Tried the towel trick, and to my surprise... worked... :rolling:

I know it's just temporary but I'm on holiday from work this week and ain't played it in ages so thought I would give COD4 another bash online.

If it fails again I'll probably send it off. Got GTA 4 pre ordered but only because I managed to get it from a mate working in a Game shop for ?25.

Anyhoo, fingers crossed that it lasts me a couple of hours today so I can get my quick gaming fix for the month :)

EDIT:: Well, turns out the towel fix lasted me all of 20 minutes before the screen started tearing and the thing locked up...

Anyone that's returned a 360 in the UK able to point me in the right direction for details on sending it off to Microsoft?

Go to Xbox.com and report your fault. MS will then e-mail you a pre-paid UPS package label which you print out and attach (clearly) to a box which you pop your 360 into.

Any box is fine as long as it's not your original 360 box.

Ah ha - cheers Cormeh. http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/support "Repair Agent" seems to be the thing I'm after.

Half "very annoying" half "what the hell" I thought I would try my 360 again just to make sure the 3 red lights were still happening... I've just finished playing about an hour of COD4 with no hickups - typical :hmph:

So going to wait until it's propperly stopped working again before sending it off as there's a nice little disclaimer saying that "if your 360 is inspected and found not to have the 3 red light problem then it will be returned without repair". Awesome.

Cheers though guys - hopefully it will hold out until GTA4 :)

The towel trick works and so does the x clamp trick. You can also buy a kit that should fix your broken 360 here:

My advice is to send it off to MS for repair as you will have your warranty extended for another 12 months. It took 2 weeks to get my console back from MS. I rang them up a week and a half after they received my console to get a shipping date. To my surprise my new console was returned a few days later. Saying that I am a very good customer to MS so it is in there interest to keep me on side.
