So my dad was to vote for Mccain, me for obama. But for me its going to be a hassle on a weekday since I registered to vote near my house so I'd be driving 1 hr both ways after my classes. My dad said since we were cancelling out our votes anyways, neither of us could vote, saving me a trip. My mom is voting Obama regardless. Should I be arsed?

Self satisfaction?

Able to bitch if the McCain wins, because you voted.

That's all I've got.

I bet your dad will sneakily vote anyway, even if you make a pact. Those Republicans will stop at nothing, even deceiving their own offsping.

Turn the tables. Agree not to vote, then secretly vote 10 times, in different disguises, with stolen ID.

It may be a one hour drive each way, but this only happens once every four years. Now, if you don't care in the least bit about this election or the direction of this country by all means stay home. If you do care you should try your best to get out there.

Well see there no point if my dad would be voting for the other guy anyways, I'm pretty sure he won't be arsed if I'm not. Well, from this family it would be +1 obama from my mom anyways. I do have plenty, plenty of school work to do.

You know theres a shitload more to voting than just "MCCAIN VS OBAMA OMG LOL"

You're really selling yourself short if you dont take a stand on your local propositions and elections

Go vote if you appreciate your citizenship.

Choosing your new overlord is a key aspect of your American citizenship, vote you lazy bum.

Did anybody even read the OP? If he and his father go to vote, it will be completely pointless. Assuming that's the only thing they're voting for anyway.

Irrelevant, voting for voting's sake is actually not a bad thing. Voter turnout is low enough as it is.

You must not have read my post then. There's a shitload more on ballots than "OBAMA OR MCCAIN"

There's pages of issues to vote for, especially if your state allows voting on propositions like AZ does

Judges, state legislature, Congress, corporate commissions, mayor, city council, etc etc etc

There is going to be more on the ballot than McCain or Obama. There is also, depending on what is going on in your county/state could be amendments to your state's constitution, representative votes, congressional, district, and other stuff. On the sample ballot my mom got it includes:

President and Vice President
Congressional Rep. in Congress for your district
Legislative rep.
State Rep.
County Sherrif
Property Appraiser
Tax collector
Supervisor of Elections
County Commission
Nonpartisan stuff
Soil and Water supervisor

As well as 4 amendments on constitutional stuff.

So. I say go and vote. It is a right as American citizens we are lucky to have. Exercise that right.

Wouldn't it be better if it was +2 for Obama from your family? Vote, America's turnout is ridiculously low as it is.

I did say "Assuming that's the only thing they're voting for anyway." :arms:

Wouldn't it be better if it was +2 for Obama from your family?

If he goes to vote, his dad is as well. That brings it back to +1.

I'm not saying he shouldn't go because like everyone else is saying there is plenty more to vote on.

Irrelevant, voting for voting's sake is actually not a bad thing.
Can you explain this to me?

Vote! VOTE!

My dad and his new wife almost assuredly voted for McCain, and even though that's the case I went and voted for Obama.

Votes cancelling each other out is total bullshit. You need to vote, as we need all the votes we can get to get somebody proper in there.

Even if your state is heavily democrat or republican, don't feel your vote won't matter because your state will overwhelmingly support Obama or overwhelmingly support McCain. Cast your vote anyways. It counts.

And man... in Texas Obama is only 10 points behind McCain in the polls. How crazy is that? Texas of all places!

Sign up for vote by mail. Because you two know what your votes will be, and assuming neither of you will be pulling a fast one, you could certainly skip voting and it wouldn't make a difference.

The "my vote won't count" dilemma has NOTHING to do with the problem presented in this thread.

If his dad is going to vote, so is he. That means there is no effect. (on the presidential front at least) They are bound to each other like two opposite charged magnets... They agree to save each other the trouble by not going at all, because of this.

According to AJ Rimmer there still is some kind of plus to having two people vote opposite eachother, though I'm waiting for him to explain that to me.

It's about exercising your right to vote. I had two people voting McCain for my Obama. I still voted. It's not pointless. If everybody took the mindset you're presenting, this would be a ****ed up voting system.

You should've applied for an absentee ballot man. I'm registered to vote in Frederick MD...I applied for it last Tuesday, got it here at UMD on Thursday, and mailed it Friday. It was really painless.

My dad is voting McCain so I had to cancel him out. He's afraid that Obama will turn this into a welfare state with a bunch of lazy people living off the government /facepalm.

This has nothing to do with a mindset. We're talking about a specific situation here. You're misinterpretting the OP's dilemma as the common 'my vote wont count baww' dilemma. Like I already said.

You having two people voting against you is completely different. They're going to vote regardless of whether you vote or not, so OF COURSE you should vote.

I don't see how you don't understand the OP's situation.

Let's give another interesting station for you to melt your brain over:

Say I wanted to go out with 2 of my friends to go vote, and it was far away like the OP. So we decide to all go together. I'm driving. I want to vote Obama, they want to vote McCain. If I decide not to vote, they can't. It would in fact be better for me not to vote in this situation because I would essentially be giving McCain +1 over Obama. Provided my friends don't go sneak off on their own of course. And neither do I.

In the OP's case it's 1v1, and if they're going to decide whether to spend over 2 hours and gas to go vote to no effect, or sit at home to no effect, they'd prefer sitting at home.

Well if OP doesnt care about any of the other votes besides presidential he probably shouldnt be voting anyway.

I understand the "voting is good" philosophy, and I agree, but that doesn't hold a candle next to the solid logic of basic math. This is an exception situation, to put it simply. Look at the outcomes of either choice made. "Voter turnout" is completely unrelated to this. People are concerned about voter turnout because not enough people are putting their vote in. They're not talking about the people who are in rare situations like the OP, they're talking about those who THINK they are in the OP's situation, where the ambiguous "someone" out there will cancel their vote. Or that they think their vote is so small it won't count. This is absolutely not the case here, and people who get all angry at the OP are blindly following their "vote vote vote" philosophy and ignoring the simple logic of the situation.

I think the whole "cancel out your vote" thought is ridiculous. Math shouldn't be involved. Votes should not be conditional based on the votes of other people, no matter the situation.

Both he and his dad should go vote. That's my opinion. That's what I would do. Even if my dad and his new wife told me they would not vote if I didn't, but they would if I did... I would still go vote for Obama, even if it means McCain would get two more votes as a result to my one for Obama. I'd be able to say I voted. I feel proud about exercising my right to vote, and being involved in the system when I'm not being lazy and setting up conditionals for my decision to vote.

That's fine if you'd like to "feel good" but I never suggested that it would be 'wrong' to vote anyway.

The way you came in saying he should vote made it seem like there was actually a solid reason that he should vote other than supporting philosophies and feeling good. Those are boring subjects to argue about! I like arguing logical situations like the one I'm talking about. Because there are solid definite answers and no opinions involved.

Though I'm still waiting for AJ to respond because what he said sound like he actually does have a logical reason that they should vote.

I'm trying to find a wiki article on this kind of situation.

I think we all get the fact about the votes cancelling out. That's just simple math. The point is he's missing all the rest of the stuff on the ballot.

I know you said "if thats all hes voting for" but if thats the case he shouldnt even be voting for president. if none of the other issues matter to him he probably doesnt have a solid grip of the issues with the presidency

Internet forms are funny like that. If you try to defend a single point, it's often assumed that you are supporting the other points that are related to it.

I think the "two people voting against me if I vote" dilemma is quite interesting. It sort of bends the rules.

This is a stupid thread, and a stupid argument. Do whatever the **** you feel like doing after class. You'll either feel like going, or you wont... either way, I dont think anyone really cares.

There was only one initiative on my Texas ballot.

WTF. We always have a bunch in AZ

Proposition 100 (Protect Our Homes Act): Would prohibit the state or any government entity from imposing new taxes or fees on the sale, purchase, transfer or other conveyance of any interest in real property (such as homes and other real estate).

Proposition 101 (Freedom of Choice Health Care Act): Would prohibit restrictions on a person's freedom to choose a private health care plan. It would also prohibit: interference with a person's or entity's right to pay directly for lawful medical services, penalties or fines for choosing to obtain or decline health care coverage, or for participation in any particular health care system or plan.

Proposition 102 (Marriage Protection Amendment): Would amend the Arizona Constitution to define a valid or recognized marriage as only a union of one man and one woman.

Proposition 105 (Majority Rules Initiative): Would provide that an initiative measure that establishes, imposes or raises a tax, a fee or other revenue or mandates a spending obligation on a private person, a labor organization, other private legal entity or this state shall not become law unless the initiative measure is approved at the election by a majority of qualified electors registered to vote in the state.

Proposition 200 (Payday Loan Reform Act): Would expand the payday loan industry to practice in the state indefinitely. Also, the fees which these lenders are allowed to charge would drop from $17.65 to $15 on a $100, two week loan. Lenders would not be permitted to roll over the principal into extended loans and would have to offer consumers repayment plans.

Proposition 201 (Homeowners Bill of Rights): Would guarantee a 10 year warranty on new homes, make homebuilders correct construction defects or compensate the homeowner, guarantees that homeowners can participate in choosing contractors to do repair work, and gives buyers the right to cancel within 100 days and get back most of their deposits.

ANYONE IN AZ VOTE NO ON THIS. I work for a homebuilder. It takes us 89 days to build a home start to finish. If you cancel your contract within 100 days you only lose 5% of the money you put down. We will be building hundreds of houses for nothing when buyers cancel out. This will put homebuilders out of business and raise property prices astronomically

Proposition 202 (Stop Illegal Hiring Act): Changes current Arizona law that prohibits employers from intentionally or knowingly employing an alien who is not authorized under federal law to work in the United States. The definition of "knowingly employ an unauthorized alien" would be changed to require actual knowledge by an owner or officer of the employer.

Proposition 300 (Commission on Salaries for Elective State Officers): Would increase the salary of legislators from $24,000 to $30,000 per year.

Though I'm still waiting for AJ to respond because what he said sound like he actually does have a logical reason that they should vote.

Nope, it's already been said; Increasing voter turnout, exercising your right, furthering statistics are all reasons for why you should vote even if you know your vote will be cancelled out.

Well I don't know exactly what else is on the ballot, but if it's understandable and I'm clearly sided I'd vote on it. All I know for sure is that I don't want Bush III or a retarded Peggy Hill in charge. I'd say I'm more than a couple notches above oblivious to the issues at hand.
