Aperture workers

'Bring your daughter to work day...'

Maybe Chell is the daughter of one of the Aperture Employees, maybe Cavey-boy himself. I can see this being included as a story element.

Once that sphere falls out of her during the boss battle, she says that it was installed to stop her use the neurotoxin. That happened and was rectified before the portal storms, which then could have driven everyone off.

Okay, here's my idea: GLaDOS is being commanded by someone to kill everyone except himself and the test subjects. This person would probably take care of the future test subjects and clean up the bodies. This person is trying to find the one person who can usefully wield the ASPHD, AKA Chell. Who is this person? Probably the G-Man. This explains why the test subjects are alive but no one else is. This also explains why GLaDOS had a moral capacitator, even though everyone in the facility was dead. Plus, if it was the G-Man, he was probably testing if the people could destroy GLaDOS, so he wrote many of the Ratman drawings in Test Chamber 19 (though not in the earlier part of the game).

Sorry that was so long.

Sorry if I'm wrong, but for some reason I distinctly remember seeing a person in one of the blurred windows...

EDIT: Or it could have been Portal Prelude. :\

She could have lied about the bodies but its possible the GLADOS takeover happened during the 7 hour war. People couldn't care less then about some rogue AI.

Lol, if Gman killed both Aperture Science and Black Mesa, you've got to wonder how many top secret labs he has destroyed...

Personally, I don't trust a single word that Glados is saying. She's like 200% madness and bluffing.
It's obvious the workers run away and evacuated the whole facility when the RC took place. Chell was forgotten in bed, in stasis, probably because of a minor malfunction of the "wake up" system.

I rather believe this than the weird theory with invisible androids gathering bodies and re-aranging turrets.

my theory

i think that chell is the daughter of one of the previous scientists, as on the aperature science website, the first bring your daughter to work day is also the first day that GLaDOS was activated, so maybe GLaDOS was mad at the start, took scientists daughters, ran the experiments of getting through the areas, which would explain the writngs, as bein previous experiments gone mad. and obvioulsy, if GLaDOS was kidnapping the daughters, then the scientists just decide feck this and ran away, leaving the base empty, and GLaDOS going mad, and lonely cause no one was able to live long enought o get through all the tests, although if they did then they'd just get burned anyway.

i also dont know what the date is when the game is set, but im guessing that "daughter day" was 2001, and this could be like 20 years later. so chell could have been a lil girl when she was first there.

again this is just my theory, so dont hate me for it.

also, maybe it wasnt a morality core thingy, cus at anypoint in the game you can die, morality would mean that she would try to stop it, and if it falls out at the end, then how come she tries to kill chell in the fire, surely theres a morality issue there. so the thing that falls off her cud be nothing at all.

although i was reading something on the aperture website, where a worker has accessed a live feed of the relaxation chamber, and he says that they are in all in lockdon, so the couldnt have escaped, so GLaDOS could have killed them, also at the end of the game an arm comes down to put out the candle, which im guessin is controlled by GLaDOS, somaybe she could have used that arm to move the dead bodys into the incinerator, or she just made protals, like in the relaxation chamber.

If it's too late to post here, sorry. Anyway, we only ever really see the test chambers and Glados's room, there might very well be piles of corpses in the offices and halls. Also, that they would never reset the turrets seems strange to me, would they let one test subject move the cubes and turrets, say "screw it" and leave it be? I think they reset the room for each test subject. Also, maybe Glados somehow moved the corpses into the firepits? Or that chell has been in Stasis or whatever for so long the corpses have decomposed? If this doesn't make any sense, it's just my idea.

So... She's been in a stasis for over 100 years? Even if the skin was gone there'd be skeletons, and that would take hundreds of years to decompose, because it's pure calcium.

I always imagined there being some sort of grabbing arm or something that would set everything up again, or simply that every other test subject didn't get as far as Chell, or didn't knock any turrets over, just found a hole and escaped.

Or it could be that she activated some sort of false alert situation, and workers were herded to emergency 'safe' zones, where she dealt with them. And let's not forget her access to furnaces.

Yeah, but on one of the other forums I heard that someone thought about the Enrichment Center containing thing being movable up and down, so maybe Chell's on a different level than everyone else. Plus, as for GLaDOS not physically stopping Chell, the morality core might have been to stop that kind of thing. So yeah, the neurotoxin might not have killed everyone. Personally I still think that the Gman is in on all this and was looking for someone else like Gordon to help in the fight against the Combine.

Im just thinking, what if G-Man was Glados, like in a control room speaking through a microphone. It wouldn't be hard to change his voice? Has anyone noclipped into the walls to look for another room?

Sorry, but I have only played Portal once and dont hardly know anything about it.

I think that GLaDOS could have used portals to dispose of the bodies, since she opened portals for you when you didn't have the portal gun yet.

Or maybe Chell is actually in a 'virtual reality' machine that GLaDOS controls outside the machine. (Just a really crazy idea)

Don't make fun of Ben. He has the start to a good idea. As I said before, I'm a fan of the idea that the G-Man is actually behind all of Aperture, including GLaDOS and the apparent killing of everyone. He's looking for more people like Gordon or Adrian (Shepard).

Sorry for saying that twice, but I wanted to give my point. As for the specifics of Ben's idea, I don't think that the G-Man was GLaDOS, as SPOILER ALERT! you fight GLaDOS at the end of Portal. And her speaking was pretty consistent with her movements / what was happening. So unless the G-Man was inside of GLaDOS, like an exoskeleton, it probably wouldn't be him.

This is what i find strange about Portal.

Bring Your Daughter To Work Day. Chell most have been in that cell thing for many years if she really came on that day ... If there even were a day like that.

How could a test subject draw "blood" crosses above some of the turrets without being killed? If they downed the turret to draw it why put it up again?

And then the whole thing with no bodies after the neurotoxin, who put the morality core in after the gas and such.

I think that AS made one big test which is the place where Chell is running around. They may do it just see what would happen if GLaDOS maybe went nuts killing everyone in AS and if someone could survive. Why would AS give GLaDOS the ability to gas the whole facility? Unless they're retarded and thought it would be fun to give Her that i can't see why they would do it.

maybe they used a portal? go half into a portal then paint it above the turret?

maybe glados killed everyone in the facility to actually DEFEND the facility. they might have been under attack by something, maybe the combine, and glados neurotoxined the place to stop them getting hold of the technology. in EP2 eli says it could result in another black mesa, if there keeping technology that dangerous on a small ship imagine what they must be keeping in their main building.

I think Nightlord is right, but to Skygge, I must say some things:
1.) Bring Your Daughter To Work Day probably happened when she was, say, four. Portal has been theorized to take place around, oh say, 2008. That means that, if BYDTWD happened sometime around '82, then Chell only aged about 20 years or so. 20 + 4 =24 yrs. old, which fits Chell's appearance.
2.) The blood crosses part is right, but then again, that could be paint that was originally put up by Aperture when there were ppl still there. But I bet that that was just some guidance and wasn't really part of the storyline.
3.) Everyone seems to be forgeting that we never actually see places where bodies might be. Do we ever get to investigate those "rushed out" looking rooms with the Black Mesa slides were playing? No. And there were plenty of locked doors in that game where people would have run out to to escape the neurotoxin. Though why the people put GLaDOS in control of neurotoxin is a good question...

they might have given glados control over the turrets, neurotoxin ect to defend the facility. kind of like how black mesa had automated turrets that shoot anything that moved. aperture might not have had a complete security team and thought it was safer to have an AI that 'couldnt' make mistakes.[obviously did]
