heh, 2 weeks before the supposed release there's still no sign of a gone gold. appears everyone making that 2 week rule is wrong, unless an announcement is made later tonight.

The '2 week rule' never made sense in the first place. It doesn't explain games like Unreal 2 and SWG that announced gold a mere few days before they shipped.

There never was a 2 week rule. Ive heard some games went gold 4 days before their release.

If you imagine the speed of domestic CD and DVD writers these days, and imagine how much faster industrial CD and DVD pressers are, between the day it leaves Valves offices, and the day it's fully packaged and ready to be shipped, you're talking 4 days minimum, 10 days max. The manuals and all the other stuff could have been finished for weeks.

GARP?!?!
is that you, from the TXB forums??
we seem to have the same interest from what i read, tool, perfect circle, x-box, half-life 2, whats next?!

thats still 10 days maximum, i mean... there's only 14 days left, they dont really have too much time to spare. plus, they have to ship it out to a whole ton of countries. dunno how they're going to do it.

Arghhh with all this Gone Gold crap it bothers me to even post in here...

Why would they announce it has gone gold when they already told everyone it was going to be out Sept 30th? We know this to be true, so maybe they just teasing us with not telling anyone that it's gold.. Heck, it probably went gold last month and they are waiting for nVidia and ATI to get the latest drivers out already.

Also, maybe it's going to be released over Steam first and then retail in which case it can go gold whenever they make enough off Steam :p

i wonder how many copies they need per region.

in the US and its seperate parts(east coast, mid-west, south, etc) , Asia, europe, etc.

100,000s? 1,000,000s?

anywho, its doesnt take 3 days to ship from seattle to japan.
In a couple days they should be able to get all the copies they need to their locations.

Plus the days to make and put the cds in boxes (4-6? i dont have a clue)

so i think 10 days is enough, little tight perhaps, but doable.

But im guessing : D so i dont have a clue D:

EDIT: The mighty G Newell said that the boxed version would be availible the same day as the Steam version, If one is late other will be too.

er, i got ut2003 at EB 6 days after it went gold. i got GTA3pc 8 days after it went gold.

2weeks isnt the minimum

Uh, to reassure it's hoard of eager fans that everything is on time? It takes very little time to prepare and release a short official statement..

Absolutely correct. It could have happened this way. There has been many statements saying that it will be released on the 30th...but they've all been unofficial and short of actualities. Once we hear "it has gone gold" or "it will in fact, be released on September 30th, 2003", we'll all be antsy.

This has been mulled before and mostly discarded...it has been said by valve over and over that it will be on the shelves (internationally) on the 30th....but I wouldn't put it away completely until I hear the official announcement.

As each day goes by, I get antsy-er and antsy-er...

Sexual preference :naughty:

How about sending Gabe an e-mail asking if it went gold...

betcha you got those games after the gold ANNOUNCEMENT...not the actual gold date....just guessing, but I think it's a good guess.

How long do you think it takes to press, say half a million disks (or more for multi-disk games). These things take time, even if they have an entire warehouse of duplication machines. Then they have to package the disks (plain envelopes, jewel cases, dvd cases...) this also takes a certain amount of time. Then, they have to slide them into the boxes (no doubt printed way in advance) and celephane the package, then they have to group them and send them off to distrubution centers. The distrubitution centers then figure out where they go (what companies are placing what orders, putting the retailers labels on if they desire), then they truck them out to the metro centers, divide them up again and then, finally to your friendly neighborhood store... Then...the store has to price it (it not already priced), inventory it, then put it on the shelves....

Which all takes time, my friend. I'm betting those games announced Gold when they were already in their boxes.

First of all, you're assuming there is a two-week rule, and secondly, you're assuming Valve would announce when the game has gone gold. My feeling is that Valve will issue a statement in a couple weeks simply saying, "Half-Life 2 has shipped and will be available for purchase at your local retailer September 30."
