Arcania: Gothic 4 Demo Released

Never played a Gothic game beyond a demo for Gothic 3.

Not high on my priorities, but I'll give it a try eventually.

Downloading. Curious to see how much different this will be with this new developer.

I have a feeling this will be pretty good. They had even pushed the release back a year to polish it up.

I will be very interested to see which I like better: this or Two Worlds 2. Both houses have made great strides in improving their games so this should be a fun romp. Downloading now....

I love these actually pretty shitty RPGs, will definitely try this one out.

Well I just finished and I have to say that I didn't want it to end!! My biggest complaints are the mouse sensitivity which even at its lowest is still ridiculous and the voice acting of a few of the characters is worse than horrendous. Other than that, the combat was terrific and actually reminded me of Demon's Souls with its fluidity, but not quite that good as button mashing will beat just about all of the enemies encountered. All in all though, really fun. I will likely be getting this for PC when it drops. Now bring on the Two Worlds 2 demo!!

if you said it reminds you of Demon's Souls count me in!

i bought the Gothic games but never tried them

I'm ashamed to admit I own all the Gothic games(and their expansions) but haven't finished a single one of them.:(

I played the first really far, then when I got closer to the end of the game, bam, I realized I had completely messed up my leveling for the game and was essentially ****ed.

Meaning I had to start all over, and that just pissed me off to the point that I put the game on my to-do-before-I-die list instead.:(

Also, there is just something that feels weird to me about Gothic games that have such large open-ended worlds, but no respawning wildlife(they only respawn at set intervals, i.e. when a new chapter begins, never in-between.)

I nearly bought Gothic 2, but bought WoW instead. I nearly bought Gothic 3, but bought Oblivion instead. Or something like that.

Something similar will probably happen again. There's just not enough time, and games aren't cheap enough. I will try to pick this up when it's like $8

VirusType2.. You play(ed) WoW?

My perception of you has been forever changed.:(

Am I the only **** here who hasn't played that accursed MMO?

I only bought WoW because people said it was better than Everquest.

I just shattered your world.

I don't like subscription based games any more. But I used to play them for like 5 years with my [long distance] girlfriend.

Well your head's gunna explode when I tell you that I also played it.

(for 3 months)

*Falls to the floor twitching violently and foaming at the mouth*

Never played WoW thank god :D

Downloading this now, wonder if it will be any good :)

*is now more interested*

I absolutely loved the concept of Demon's Souls, but I never got a chance to try it.

EDIT: I played WoW for about 3 hours, got bored, never played it again.

yes. played it for about a year

will try this tonight or when I get a chance. I really wanted to like Gothic 3 but it was a buggy mess hopefully this doesnt suffer the same fate. I need a good rpg as I'm not all that interested in most games releasing this holiday

Eh, I played it for a good hour and got halfway through killing the loam bugs before thinking "Do I really want to keep playing this?"

The weight behind the combat WOULD be interesting if it wasnt for the fact that its blind button mashing and that there is almost no feedback when you hit something. The quests and dialogue were also dull as hell, and magic seemed wholly underwhelming.

However, the graphics are pretty nice (though there was this strange skipping that kept occurring for me), and headshotting deer with my bow was pretty entertaining.

Still, I'm really not sure if this is worth anyone's time.

Yeah, I should add a little more detail. What Bob mentions here is true and this is the thing that makes the combat NOT like Demon's Souls. Here you CAN just spam your attacks and win most battles. Maybe they can add a little more feedback to hits and blocks, but it's kind of late in the game. The hitting and roll dodging around enemies is what made me think of DS. My suggestion is play the demo all the way through first and see how battle is against the more interesting enemies toward the end of the demo. It was much more fun at that point.

A few players of previous Gothic games have a lot of gripes though, esp about the lack of an open world, bad voice-acting, lack of character classes and magic spells, weak dialogue, weak quests, etc. The forums of the official site have a good thread on it somewhere.

I will be going back to it tonight to see if it still stands up to a second playthrough. Hopefully it will. I REALLY want to try Two Worlds 2 too, but I have no idea when the demo will be released.

Oh, and I have never played WoW. :P

Lack of an open world : Blasphemy
Bad voice-acting : Classic Gothic
Lack of classes : Blasphemy
Lack of spells : Blashpemy
Weak Dialogue : Classic Gothic
Weak quests : Its a demo?

Some of those seem like huge changes. I didn't realize how much was cut out. Still need to find the time to play this and see for myself, damn Civ 5 is a time stealing sonofabitch.

"A few" previous gothic players having gripes? All previous Gothic players ought to have problems with this.

****ing bullshit.

Hahaha! Yeah, I was trying not to be too alarmist, but yeah, most of them hate it. At least I have the advantage of having not played the previous ones so I have nothing to compare them to. The lack of an open world makes me worry though. I won't get it if it doesn't open up once you get off the island (assuming the demo is the first part of the game).

^I never played the first, I heard it was kinda like Gothic in that enemy and wildlife never respawned, is that true?

If so, don't you end up with a really empty world?

Not a clue. Just preordered it with Civ 5.

Who needs the demo? It is already preordered :P

Heh, true. It looks like it is shaping up to be good, but I'd rather try the demo, or read a few in-depth reviews first. Since I've heard from multiple sources the first one was garbage.

I personally wouldnt have preordered Two Worlds 2, because even if it looks good now the first one wasnt all that great. At the very least I would try the demo first.

Hopefully it'll end up being a hugely improved open world game like Just Cause 2 was to Just Cause.

From the previews that some in the gaming press have seen it certainly sounds like they are making sure that this one is not total crap like the first one. They openly acknowledge how bad it was and I think that's a big step for devs. I am actually pretty confident in how much better it will be than the first. I know, a pile of jelly could be more fun than the first, but still.

So wait, Two Worlds sucks, Gothic 4 supposedly sucks, but Two Worlds 2 will be fantastic?

The first game sucks but the developers say the new one won't so OKAY PREORDERED LOL

Read the previews, which indicate it should be better than its predecessor, and it is a good sign that the devs acknowledge how crappy the first one was, but could they have realistically done otherwise?

Still, like you I am quite confident it'll be better than the first, and as long as the game has entertaining quests, serviceable VA/dialog, and decent combat I'll be content. I'm definitely not expecting anything ground breaking with TW2. I could be surprised, however.

having fun with the demo with only a few minor complaints. it's also relatively bug free which is great surprise. it seems somewhat unfinished; some of the graphics in the menus looked like they were placeholders and there's very little in the way of descriptors for your skills
