a spin-off of half life 2. set in 2075, The Combine have been defeated many years ago and are now long forgotten, but The combine's biggest allie, Arch recieved a distress message from combine forces on earth when Gordan Freeman was about to destroy the combine once and for all. when Arch arrived, they were too late and the combine were gone. but then they had a planet perfect for testing and developing their weapons and technology. they invaded earth, in a great battle that last for weeks. millions were killed, on both sides. The main character, Mark was sent to one of earth's allies Tisar by his father when he was 4. now he has returned to earth...
this is the first chapter of the story: Who? what? & where?
The spacecraft slowly docked, the side doors electronically opened with a buzz, I stepped out and looked around the arrival section of the space port, there were cameras and fences everywhere.
-“you better move before an Arch trooper, shouts at you” said a voice from behind me. I turned and saw a scruffy looking man carrying a suitcase and huddling along. I walked over to the gate that led to the main terminal, an arch trooper stepped in front of me blocking the way
-“What seems to be the problem?” I asked
-“Empty your pockets” He replied in an almost non-human voice
I turned my pockets inside out and revealed nothing. The trooper moved and allowed me pass, through the gate was a narrow passageway, at the end, I had reached the main terminal, all along the walls were floating holographic screens that welcomed people and gave some information.
-“Welcome to Earth, one of Arch’s finest research and development centres. If you are a citizen of earth, please make your way through gate 6, if you an Arch member of level 5 or lower please make your way through gate 2, if you are an unregistered visitor to please go gate 9”droned on a woman on a huge holographic screen that was hovering by one of the wall.
I watched the screen for a while, and then looked round, All around, people were walking through the separate gates that lead onto checkpoints, then the city of Marith. Security seemed really tight in the space port. Way above the floor, hung walkways populated by Arch troopers who were patroling and watching over the ‘citizens’. Arch is an Alien civilisation that invaded earth in 2057, they claimed to have helped us, they said they we protecting us from ourselves. I had never seen Arch or the invasion, when I was 4. My father put me on a ship heading for an allied planet called Tisar. That is until, Arch invaded Tisar too, but I had left for earth just days before they invaded.
Today is the first day I have seen earth after the invasion. It is nothing like I expected it to be. There is a lot of freedom and rights. But maybe that’s just to make people feel safe.
-“You there! Move along” shouted a trooper from a walkway
I moved along to gate 6, I looked at the faces of the different people, they didn’t seem worried, although they didn’t look to happy either.
-“ID please” said a small bald man in the checkpoint in a slow and toneless voice.
-“Uh, I don’t have one, this is my first day on…” I tried to say.
-“Well then, you need a ID card, you should have gone to gate 9, but oh well you’re here now” The man fumbled around in a cabinet, then produced a small sheet “Fill this out”
I filled in my Name, Age, where I came from, any previous arrests and if I was in possession of anything that was considered illegal. I gave back the sheet.
-“Please wait” the man said. He put the sheet into a machine and a few second later a small card came out.
-“Here”
I picked up the card and walked towards the exit of the port. As I made my way across the foyer of the port I could look up past the huge skylight that took up the roof and see what looked like gun ships fly overhead, they looked long and white, with rockets attached to the sides and 2 huge lasers attached to the top. I had reached the exit, I opened the door and stepped out, then stopped.
Hundreds of Arch troopers were marching through the streets all in perfect formation. the arch troopers were wearing black gasmasks and huge black armour and were carrying massive powerful looking guns. Beyond the street and the skyline of the apartments and offices 5 huge black structures towered of the tiny buildings, all around the black structures were gun ships. I looked to my left and right and saw people standing against the walls of the port. I took a few steps forwards, then stopped again and looked up in surprise as the sky was suddenly blocked out by a huge Arch command ship that was passing over the city, the Arch command ship was the only thing Arch thing I had ever seen before coming back to earth. The Arch command ships were an unstoppable force, with shields and masses of weapons.
-“Your new here, aren’t you” said a voice from behind me
I turned around and saw a young lady standing there, she must have been in about her 20s.
-“Uh, ya. How could you tell?” I replied
-“Well, you’ve been standing there for the past 10 minutes, staring at things that happen here everyday. Oh ya, my name is Sadie”
-“My name is Mark, so uh, how long have you been in Marith?”
-“I’ve been here for 3 years, I moved here from countryside when it became to dangerous to live out there. I now live with a group of people in a small apartment on the other side of town. So, Mark, what part of the world did you come here from?”
-“I’m not from earth, well I’m am sort, when I was a kid, my dad sent me to Tisar. Today is my first day back on earth”
-“do you know if your father is still alive?”
-“I don’t really know”
-“You two move along” Demanded an Arch officer moving the people away from the port.
-“Come on, lets go. Do you have anywhere to stay?”
-“no”
-“you can stay with me and my friends then. Follow me, make sure you don’t get lost”
I followed her through the back alleys and passage ways of the city, as we seemed to move further away from the city centre, the number of Arch troopers patroling and guarding seemed to get smaller.
-“wouldn’t it be easier to just walk along the roads?” I asked
-“This way is quicker” she replied
I wouldn’t have know if one way was easier than the other, I had hadn’t been on earth for years never mind even visiting this city. We had stopped walking through the alleys and started to walk along side the roads, the buildings were no longer crammed together, they all seemed spaced out with parks scattered around the place.
-“Sadie, how come people are still driving around in cars, when Arch have developed hover techonlogy?”
-“Because Arch doesn’t care about us, every so-often, they will give us some of their technology. But it would be nothing compared to what Arch actually possess. They make us think that they are protecting us! They only invaded earth so they could learn how we had created nuclear technology plus they needed a place to stick all their experiments and tests. then once they invaded" she paused "hundreds of cities laid in ruin, millions lay dead on the streets. And now they use our planet to develop their weapons and technology”

-“Do you know what happened to London?” I asked, London was where I lived before the invasion.
-“London? no one goes near London, ever since it became the main Arch Troop Training and Creation Centre”
-“What’s the Arch Troop, thingy?”
-“If you’re a criminal, rebel or someone who has gotten a little to big for their boots they take you there. Your in there for months. They brainwash you, you have parts of your body removed and robotics put in, you forget everything you ever knew. They teach you to hate earth, and everyone on it, you become one of them.
-“Well we’re here now” Sadie said, as I looked up the huge apartment building. We went inside and walked up the stairs that led to her room. The walls were bland and boring. As we passed every floor, I could see people peeking out of their doors, seeing who was passing through.
-“Why are the people here so, uh, edgy?”
-“Because, Arch troopers have been checking buildings more and more often for rebels. If they find just one in a building, then everyone in that building will most properly be killed”
We had reached the floor that Sadie’s room was on, I looked out of a window, and saw the parks and small semi-detached houses below, in the distance I could see the city centre with its skyscrapers and the 5 black towers. Sadie knocked on the door 4 times. The door open and a large, well built man stood in the doorway.
-“Ah, there you are. We were beginning to get worried where you were” He paused and looked at me “Hello, who’s this then?” He had a very cockney accent.
-“He’s a friend” Sadie replied
-“Another one?” He chuckled “ Well are you gonna come in then?
I walked into the room and could now see, 3 other people in the room, all sitting around a tv that was showing the troopers marching through the city centre streets.
-“Mark. This is Alan, Connie and Ian”
-“G’day” they all said. All 3 of them were Australian
-“And you’ve already Dave”
-"Just what part of the world are we in anyway?" I asked "I couldn't see from the Arch transport that i came here in"
-"You're in australia. Mirath is the only city left in this country, apart from Setan City, but that city is under extemely heavy Arch occupation" Dave said.
-"Heavy occupation?" i answer, as i looked at the tv that was now showing gunships doing fly overs.
-"The number of arch troopers in this city is nothing compared to most other cities" said Sadie
Dave was about say something when he stopped and moved towards the door.
-“No, this cant be!” he exclaimed.
He opened the door and stood at the top of the stairs, then ran back inside.
-“They’re coming” said Dave
-“Who’s coming?” I asked
Ian stood up and ran into a separate room, then returned a couple of seconds later, carrying a huge green box. The others ran other to the box and opened it. Inside was an assortment of weapons.
-“What is going on!?” I shouted
Sadie put a sub-machine gun in my hands and said one thing
-“Arch”
They all stood by the door, guns aimed forward. I could hear screaming and gunfire from the floors below.
-“Get ready!” exclaimed Alan
I stood back against the wall and watched in horror as the door opened and 3 masked and armoured troopers stood there with pusle rifles.
-“Fire!” shouted Alan.
All five of them fired at the same time 1 bullet hit a trooper in the shoulder causing him to fall back, the other 2 troopers fired into the room, Ian screamed and fell to the floor as a bullet ripped through his leg . Dave pointed a pistol directly at a troopers head and fired, The trooper stumbled backwards then tumbled over the railing of the stairs and fell down 14 floors. The remaining trooper reached for his radio, but stopped when he noticed 4 guns pointed at his face. Bang. He was on the floor. Sadie turned to me and asked If I was alright. I just stood there in the corner of the room, emotionless. She waved her hand in front of my face.
-“Mark?”
-“Super! I’ll be going now” I answered, just before dropping the sub machine gun on the floor.
-“Mark, we are rebels, I should have told you earlier, but out on the street wasn’t really the place to tell you. Arch troopers are going to be looking for us now, they’ll be looking for you as well. We’re now going to head for a small rebel settlement outside of Marith. I suggest you come with us, troopers will be all over this area in minutes”
I looked at the others who were grabbing their bags and rushing out of the door, I then looked down at Ian, who had died from the gun wound in his leg.
-“Ok, I’ll come” I said in an uncertain voice.
