I've got one pre-ordered, 5999 Swedish Krones. But it all hangs on Tokyo Game Show, in September, if I will get one or not. Otherwise I might consider canceling the pre-order and get one later.

Hell no. $599 price tag, games that will probably be at least 70 dollars each, and nothing really worth buying for. 'No' without a doubt in my mind.

Buying on release mainly for the BLU-RAY player.

Definately not. Sony doesn't bring anything I want to the table, and so I'll be sticking with my Wii.

No way I am buying a 600 euro console. I'll start considering as soon as it drops below the 400 euro mark.

Actually, Shakermaker, it's $600 not 600 euro.

No, not unless it drops in price AND gets more worthwhile titles

It's even more of a rip-off in the UK so a definate no. In a good half decade's time, if enough good titles have become available I may just pick one up, until then...

I'll be waiting a long time, but I will ultimately purchase one, I think. I mean, it's going to have Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, so I'm in a pickle.

Well, previous Metal Gears have jumped platform, and it never hurts to stick around and wait for Kojima to bring out a new version with a plethora of zany features a year later. That year you wait could be the year the PS3 gets a competative price-point.

It takes 45 minutes to burn a 25 GB Blu Ray. That's terrible. I just think that is to much space on one disc. You would have to deliberately try to find more things to gather up to make burning a disc worthwhile. I still don't think the price of the disc makes it economical.

Sony want to have 25GB, 50GB, up to 200GB discs, well at 1x speed a 200GB disc would take 6 hours to burn.

Maybe when Blu Ray gets up to speed (pun intended) I can understand it. Right now, it's just ridiculous. I still have trouble finding enough things to burn a CD with. I haven't even needed to move up to a DVD burner yet.

I think 48x speed should be good, although I don't know Sony's plans or the limitations of the drive, but I'm sure it will be years before it gets up to speed. I think CD ROM stopped at about 48x speed, and it's pretty decent.

I don't see the need to jump to High def discs yet, especially when there is no clear winner yet, and the difference between DVD and High Def DVD isn't nearly as large as it was with VHS tapes to DVD.

I think HD-DVD beats Blu Ray on every level. The drive is half the price, the discs are cheap, whereas the blu ray discs are way too expensive to be useful for anything other than business (IMO), the HD-DVD's burn much faster since they are smaller, yet they are still quite large and serve their purpose of a High Def quality movies with no problems. The image quality is equal and has all of the same connection options and resolution support. (despite what Sony would like to trick you to believe) Sony created this format on their own like a Rogue, and I can't believe it has gotten so much support. It looks like we are going to have 2 successful media formats. There is no way either are going to yield.

Don't count on the PS3 coming down in price for a couple years at least, and, it will still be too expensive. Anyone interested should do some research - see what the experts think.

Personally, I think Metal Gear got worse and worse over time, and looks ridiculous by now. Just everything about it is laughable. I can't see how this one game could be a big system seller for Sony, especially when Konami, id Software, Epic Games, Rockstar, Capcom, VALVe and all of the other main publishers are already doing games for the Xbox 360, and it's unknown if some of them will be doing games for Sony.

I think its impossible to say who beats what just by looking at stats, just as its impossible to judge these next-gen consoles by their theoretical performance. Its devilishly hard to see a Blu-Ray disc playing anywhere. HD-DVDs looks fargin amazing I must say after seeing The Last Samurai on a Samsung 50" LCD HDTV this weekend--and only at 720p(!). While not entirely necessary, I don't mind picking up my favorite movies in a much higher quality version, but yeah, who knows who will get the most support this round. Impossible to say atm.

The experts are saying that if the PS3 wants to compete in this next generation, then the price had better be slashed in 2007. Everyone seems to agree that 2007 is going to be the biggest year ever for making or breaking the next-gen of consoles.

I think it looks incredible and have loved it for years. The last few have really been amazing. The only laughable parts were intentionally put there by Kojima because he is the consumate console funnyman.

The two things have nothing really to do with each other. MGS4 will sell systems just as Gears of War will sell systems. Each console has a lot of third party support this time around and exclusives are going to be harder to come by since dev costs are skyrocketing (for Sony and MS at least).

A Wii win is looking more and more probable...

why can't we just work on insane compression formats and go back to cd's :(.

Don't misinterpret what I'm saying now. I didn't say either format will win, I said - to me, HD-DVD is the better option, for the reasons I stated here:

I know, I was just reminding folks that right now forming opinions based on what we have seen on the Net is not going to do much good. That said, HD-DVD looks pretty good to me too since I can actually see it running...and in Sears no less! :E

No I won't be getting the PS3, the pricetag is stupid and you can almost get a PC with the "game" power of PS3 for just alittle more. I've decided to buy an XBOX 360 instead and save my PS3 money for an next-gen gaming PC.

MGS4 is tempting but

When the PS3 comes out microsoft is going to say "LOL PRICE DROP" and the premium 360 will most likely drop to 300, and considering the Wii is rumored to be around $250 (Or has it been confirmed?) Ill be able to buy 2 consoles for less than what a PS3 would cost me. I've always been a fan of sony but this time they can go screw themselves :|

I strongly doubt that. They don't need to. All they have to do is NOTHING and they have an advantage over Sony and the PS3. If they can sell more or even the same amount at the same pricepoint, then that's a win and there's no way their people would let them potentially lose more money by slashing the price.

And if the Wii is $200, then Sony might be in for a rough go of it in the beginning. I have no doubt that they will pick up steam as the awesome titles hit, but awesome titles will be hitting 360 much sooner, so who knows what will happen?!

From what i've read it seems the majority of games released on the PS3 will be displayed at 720p and not 1080p as promised.

I see, I have heard though that when the PS3 comes about they might drop the core package, and just sell the premium for $300, I mean like you said they dont have too because they already have the advantage over sony but who knows :| I really think they'll drop it. Not right when the PS3 comes out, but I think for christmas we'll definately see a price drop.

They damn well better drop the core package and make the premium $300. The core package is the stupidest thing...ever.

Hahaha! Don't get me wrong--I would love to see a sweet price drop, but I just don't think they'll do it even for the holidays since its already cheaper thatn the "real" competition (i.e. Sony, not Nintendo). Time will tell!

I wouldn't expect MS to slash prices so soon either, especially since the PS3 launch looks pretty weak IMO and people think $400 vs $600 (when it should be $400 vs 500). But yeah, once those AAA titles start rolling out (Final Fantasy / GTA / MGS4 / etc) the PS3 will definately pick up. Both consoles will be losing per hardware sale but PS3 takes a bigger hit, I'd imagine MS would try to take advantage of this price differential and recoup as much as possible during the initial phase of the PS3.

yeah, that article was proven false i believe.

one of the xbox people said something along the lines of "the ps3 was our price cut. :)" - so you're right.

Better but it's an entirely different article, also note this...

With Reeves' statements, it appears as though Sony will be producing PlayStation 3 consoles with different Cell processors -- some with all eight cores operational and some with just seven. Reeves however does not believe that Sony will offer different pricing for the machines and only time will tell if there will be performance differences. Reeves says however that users will not see any differences in speed. "The PlayStation 3 only uses seven of [the eight cores]. You'd have a spare."

Hence the 10-20% yield seems to refer to the other uses of Cell. :)

"We also have a separate part number for chips with all eight cores good. The stuff that’s going to be for medical imaging, aerospace and defense and data uses eight cores."
I doubt many PS3's will have 8 cores anyway. ^_^

"Reeves: There are a lot of chips with six cores operational, and we’ve been thinking about whether we should really throw all of those away."
"Electronic News: But might it be the less-expensive version of Playstation 3?
Reeves: It could, but I don’t think Sony has thought about offering that. That doesn’t mean there aren’t good uses for a chip with four SPEs [synergistic processing elements]."
What if they sold a less expensive unit with 6 cores working. Would cost them less to buy those cores.

I'm skipping this generation completely. The games look all the same with better graphics. I'll try a console in a few generations time.

MY first console was a sega master system. My second console was a playstation 2. My third console will...hopefully be a holodeck.
