Now that most of us has had the chance to check it out what do you guys think?

Personally I reckon it's awesome. The no respawning forces a more tactical game and I find mic use increased while playing it. The five round wins in a row before randomising the teams is fantastic as it prevents the long runs where one team is clearly better than the other but keeps teams of equal skill playing longer.

My biggest complaint is really aimed at server admins, arena only servers shouldn't be 24+ player servers. Since the max team size in arena is 8, 16 player servers make more sense.

I like it, it makes you take more care in what you do, value your lives more

Of course I like it, it should have been there from the start. Age old game mode.

It's like someone took the most annoying thing about TF2 (sudden death) and made a gametype out of it.

It's shite :sniper:

Kinda meh actually. Not bad but not good either, a bit in the middle. I wish they could bring the new exclusive wilderness arena maps to cp though.

Awesome.

And I don't get the people whining about having to spectate, do you have ADD or something? And how else do you propose making a Last Man Standing gamemode without having spectators?

I just accidentally joined an instant respawn arena game... it left much to be desired.

Jesus Christ. I think my hatred for "instant spawn 2fort" will only be surpassed by an instant respawn arena server if I ever am unlucky enough to land on one.

the sit outs are retarded.

I prefer the original game modes.(with sudden death)

And how do you propose you can have balanced teams without having sit-outs?

It's fun, but it's clearly not the game mode that the classes were balanced for. That is, up until now each class had its use for each map. I'd argue that engies, spies, and snipers are less useful in arena than in any other game mode, while medics, pyros and sandvich heavies are far more powerful.

(Yes, engies, spies and snipers can potentially be very useful, but they also have a good chance of being a waste of a precious team slot, and considering that the goal is to win 5 in a row, you have to really consider whether the potential benefit outweighs the risk.)

It's a lot more tactical than the other modes if you ask me, since there's no respawning. Players tend to think about their actions more, I found that teams were more coordinated and mic use was more frequent. As far as some classes being more useful than others, they are all the same usefulness for me. A spy can get behind the enemy team, backstab a medic and heavy pair and pretty much take out that team's main offense in one swoop, or take out unsuspecting enemy snipers. A sniper can headshot a heavy or medic as well, crippling the opposing team. Scouts can also rush behind enemy lines, take out snipers, or unsuspecting medics. Demomen can set up "sticky traps" behind corners and quickly take out pyros or heavies.

These classes could "save the match" if used correctly. Yes if (i.e) a scout or spy runs head on into a heavy/medic pair then that is a waste of a team slot. But if they are used correctly it is a different story. A team with too many medics or heavies could get picked off easily.

I like it. Although I seldom die in the first few seconds. I am fine sitting out for a single round, but It's not that much fun if there is three teams on a server and your waiting every other round. I wouldn't say engineers are useless on arena maps. Just don't expect to get a level 3 sentry up every round. You have to set up a sentry somewhere hidden that gets a little traffic and lure people into it as an engineer. Another good strategy for lumberyard is to set up a sentry in the cap point, due to little traffic you have a good chance of not being seen, and when the cap opens you can take out quite a few people. Just don't do it every round.

I find arena badlands to be great for spies.

I love the game mode..

AND how to evade sit outs...

When you die, you and the other deadies are teleported to a big empty room where you just kill and die and spawn and kill and die and spawn until round restarts.

No sir, I don't like it.

You're starting to get on my bad side Absinthe.

And you won't like me when you're on my bad side. Because I'll.... make passive aggressive comments behind your back. Yeah!

Well, you can get aggressive on my back, if you'd prefer...

:naughty:

:(

/dirty shame

"waaa i always die in five seconds" = don't f*cking play it like it's dustbowl.

It's decent, but I don't love it wholly. Mostly due to the fact that there is too much waiting, and that it really comes down to what classes you have and how people play with them, not how well you coordinate with your team.

I enjoy it as a break in between larger, lengthy rounds (payload for example). Or to enjoy the alpine set (fortunately Valve has promised to do other maps than arena with the alpine set, yay!).

It's a bit odd. It really depends on the teams. I found a really good server and had a blast with it for a while yesterday.

It's alright, not something I would play regularly like CTF or Payload but in small amounts arena can ve pretty fun.

agreed with that ^^^

so bscly i found out you only need heavies/soldiers with 1 medic for each to win no matter how stupid they play.

What a waste of time.

Not interested enough to play it.

Valve maps end too quickly for my taste in the first place, so arena wouldn't interest me in the slightest.

oop, perhaps I voted too soon? The server I was on had a single rail with four points (and no pause between points), but we did respawn? Anyway, I'll probably like it better when I get familiar with the layout.

I also kept hearing 'om nom nom' sounds and thought someone downloaded custom sounds, and finally learned about the sandvich. It was a little weird for a while.

I had a great couple of rounds as heavy in Ar_badlands today. Had a really cool showdown between me and an engi. Was playing very well.

Arena is just like NS:Combat, something totally different I don't want to experience in TF2. I also found it to be the most boring team deathmatch implementation ever.

Err... no?

Sorry, I forgot about pyros.

Especially the pyros.

Pyros who never switch weapon, who never jump or dodge to avoid hazards, who have 0% awareness, who do not even know where or what they actually flame, and are obviously very new to the game.

Well guess what? They're even more effective in this gamemode.

Yay, Iron_cube, the master of over exaggerations!

Number 7 on my list.

PROTIP: The Pyro's flamethrower has a range of two meters.

Protip : they move as fast as everyone else and 0.1 second of exposure at any flame range results in underserved death as a 125 class.
