I'm in pain over here, had just as much of my 9600xt as I can take, and I was planning on upgrading to a 6800gt, but the release of the 7800 complicates things. I want a good performer to last me about 2 years, but money is an issue, as I'm entering college next year. Also, I only have AGP, and definitely do not have plans to upgrade my mobo for a long time. Processor is still good at 2.6 gigs, right?

So I'm obviouslu leaning towards the 6800gt, and I'd love to make my purchase before real world expenses hit me in the face and I'm unable to. But whatto buy? and when? I'm getting an antsy purchasing finger.

But is the 6800gt still a good choice? I am a pretty serious gamer, and I want to be able to at least run UT2007, at least my goal is to have a card that is effective up until that point.

Hmm not entirely sure what UT2007 needs hardware wise, will it use the new unreal engine, because I think it uses alot of the features that have just recently been introduced in teh new nvidia cards. Best check that out since I'm not entirely sure.

The 6800's and X800's won't be running the new Unreal engine.

a 6800gt will run the new unreal engine just fine, obviously not at the highest detail, but that's what you get for playing a brand new game on a 2+ yr old card. You won't be out of luck with a 6800gt, just making some sacrifices.

At all? I find that hard to believe. Seems more like a marketing push for the 7800, which which also be lower end by the time the new engine is out.

I may be confused but I'm not stupid. My reasoning is that the 7800 seems like overkill for todays games, and yet will still be lower end for ut2007. Meanwhile the 6800gt is more affordable, can still kick todays games ass, and I firmly believe that it will run ut2007 on the lower settings.

Am I completely wrong?

No you're pretty much right, but games like BF2 and F.E.A.R. when it comes out will need that 7800gtx or R520 for full settings or close to it. F.E.A.R. more so than BF2, you could probably get BF2 on almost max settings with a 6800GT provided you have a nice cpu and 2gb ram.
