You know, after the combine puts that fortress thing into the middle of an eastern european city, dont you think that the nations army, or perhaps NATO would get involved and send in soldiers? I mean, you do see the military six-wheeled vehicle lying around, and In my opinion, it would be very cool to see an army come in and an apache dogfights one of those rotary blade enimies in the car scene, or maybey an M1A1 gets blasted by a strider, I mean, its logical to assume that the nations would not just let an alien invasion go on without any consent, and it would be logical to assume that they would generate some sort of retaliation....unless of course, something weird happened, like city 17 was the last city still standing on earth or something....I dunno, just my thought

Could it be that the combine is a future version of NATO? Afteall, they are an international police force.

Well no. I think most of the earth's population has already died because of the lack of water. The only resistance thats left is in City 17.

Oh, I was under the impression that the invasion happened rather suddenley, and the draining of the sea happens sometime ingame (notice at the beginning of e3 theres water, and at the end its dried up) but if it takes place far in the future, after a long war with the aliens, then it makes sense that there is not much resistance

Although nothing substantial, we were able to glean a little more info from Valve on a variety of topics. At points, you’ll be fighting with aliens from Xen, for reasons that have yet to be revealed. And, just as you fought the military in Half-Life, you’ll find yourself in combat against City 17 personnel.

Have you ever thaught maybe the combine had defeated every major army in the world and are now just taking care of certain resistance groups? Well one clue is the M29. This is supose to be the standard issue ridle for American Forces in the future. Where did they get them from? Maybe the American Army was defeated by the combine and the Combine started giving out the M29's to their troops. You also see sighs of resistance in the E3 Video. When he was running away from that alien space ship in the car the bridge was blown out probably to stop them from getting across to a certain area by ground. Also when he stops the car and gets out theres an APC with a Stinger type rocket launcher near it. It shows that there was a struggle against the Combine but the Combine probably won.

EDIT - Where are all the aliens coming from if you took over the planet Xen at the end of HL. Maybe they retook it but it makes no since right now.

Dont we know that they are aliens (combine)? They might be a military force that conquered the world but they are alien. In the 500MB video when gordan and some scientist kills some combine in the part with Barney you can hear them scream like zombies when you hit them. Also it could be a dried up lake in the end?!?!

I dunno, many theories are possible with the little info we have...but maybe the aliens have a huge attack that's like a giant nuclear bomb or something...something powerful enough to dry up lakes and oceans and wipe out a ton of the human race... I dunno, or maybe the aliens somehow took control of our own nuclear facilities and turned them against us. I haven't read much about the combine, but the technology they use doesn't seem human or NATO related. I doubt the next line of unmanned vehicles will be flying buzz saws. It seems like that'd be a weapon used by people scrounging for resources if explosives and bullets and such couldn't be found....who knows... I'm gonna go search for some more info on the combine now...

The combine are obviously aliens because in the Video showing the grenade/flare type weapon shot at the combine soldier when it started to burn it sounded like a weird scream, like a high pitched goat yelp. Kinda freaky, wonder whats under that helmet of there's.
