Thread title is win.

God I love Japanese voice talent. Announcers, commercials, cartoons ... whatever it is, it's done

WITH FEELING.

On a side note, I can't convince my idiot roommates that the first syllable is pronounced to rhyme with "spoke" not "Spock" ... should show them this video.

This. Don't know why everybody's so enamoured with it.

Your idiot roommates be right, that is how it's pronounced.

Friend of mine buys so many boxes of the stuff and tries to give it away for free at LAN events. Hardly anyone takes any.

What's the difference between Men's Pocky and regular Pocky?

Yep, friend of mine was always going on about it. I was thoroughly underwhelmed when I did get around to trying it.

No, they're not. The product just isn't spelled correctly. Listen to the commercial.
It's a Japanese product. They don't pronounce "po" with a long 'o', it's a much shorter vowel sound.

I took Japanese. Any word using the "po" syllable in their language is pronounced with a long O sound. "Pah" comes from their syllable "pa."

And yes, in the commercial they are using the long O sound.

Well, it's been about 5 years since I last took Japanese so maybe I'm mixing it up but I'm pretty sure "pokki" is pronounced with a short vowel sound. Wiki seems to agree that the IPA pronunciation of the "o" is the same as with "oniisan".

Goddamnit, I don't even like Pocky, why the hell am I arguing about how it's pronounced.

I invented Japanese and I can tell you the sound you should be making is the schwa.

"Pucky?"

The real fail here is that I'm trying to Romanize and Anglicize the pronunciation of an Asian language. Learning Mandarin has taught me how fruitless that is. The .ogg file to me actually sounds somewhere in between long and short after listening to it a dozen times.
