Assassins Creed: Chase Scene

I think this is probably going to be an extremely fun game to play, it's just that while at the moment some bits look awesome (eg. most of the chase animation) some bits look really clumsy. The fighting being a case in point.

Voice acting also sucks the big one.

Mind blowing, gameplay looks ****ing INTENSE!

Is there anything you dont find mind-blowing/amazing?
My signature says no!

But yeah, Assassin's Creed does look fun, no surprise, it's from the team that made Prince of Persia.

I just hope it doesnt turn into

"press a button to jump/somersault/backwards roll stab underbelly of enemy jump and twirl landing on other enemy snap neck flip through air slicing necks while in mid air kick rope that holds cart of barrels somersault over said barrels and run"

"wow look at the move I just made just by pressing a"

Very true. Good point and lets hope its not that simple.

The dialog was unfortunately typical video game fare

I'm already disappointed on how easily you can "free run" through the city. You hold a couple of buttons and the analogue stick and Altaire will grab, jump, vault, shimmy over anything in his vicinity. Absolutely no timing is needed. Thats just too simple.

qft and what bulletbrain said too, i hope it wont be like this...

There is already an AC thread with tons of game videos/interviews/articles from E3 and pre-E3. hehe

The bugs as Jade said are fixed back at the office (G4 video).

kotaku.com had a hand-on article and said the flow of the fight is more like fencing. I like the choices, how you can approach the goals and fighting style. Really awesome. The fighting is more timed with the opponents attacks. And you are not free to attack someone when they are starting to attack you. Ya know how in some games as long as you do a quick move and attack them first theirs will be aborted? You have to deal with that sword coming at you by naturally blocking or with a well timed counter.

The running part was a bit cool to watch, but mostly it looked lame.

Looked really nice, but the fights aren't as fluent as I expected. And highlighting the enemy you're interacting with looks meh ;/

The animations look a bit jerky and there was a few bugs here and there

If they clean it up before release it should be an amazing game

Yeah, all those ladies with the pots at the start of that demo were really-off putting along with the collicion animations as some blog noted too. Still, clean this up a bit more and it will be completely insane!!

The much-hyped "fluid pushing past people" didn't look too fluid. Just seemed to be pre-set animations of people moving out the way or falling over.
Looks pretty last-gen gameplay-wise at the moment...

I REALLY hope you can get a crossbow or a bow and arrow..

Yeah, I think I read somewhere that you can use a crossbow. Plus it's in the E3 2006 cinematic video. People who have played this E3's demo level just mention throwing daggers, assassin dagger/knife and sword. But supposedly it's was only a couple levels into game.

The first level you get a taste of what a powerful assassin is like with all the bells and whistles but the character fails the mission. You loose all your weapons/abilities and start over and have to earn the stuff back as you play the game.

From what I've pieced together from video interviews and articles it looks like controls are something like this.
edit: video has buttons listed on screen
Video 1 and Video 2

You naturally walk quietly. Up for falcon vision. Hold right trigger to go in a defensive mode when fighting. The selected target automatically switches to who is attacking you. Hold R trigger and left to counter. I would guess Right on the pad would let you throw/push someone. Down gets you to run. If you run to a wall and hold R trigger and press Down then you jump off the wall or jump up trying to scale the wall looking for that next grip. Then use joystick to move around while climbing the wall. What I think is cool is that he doesn't hold his hands flat like spiderman would. He actually reaches the appropriate distance and grabs the ledge or object that is sticking out more than 2 inches from the wall. If you have gloves then you can re-grab the wall if you slip or people throw rocks at you. Boots make it so you don't stumble when you run into someone but sorta roll forward I guess.

You get a taste of all abilities then lose them at the start?
Metroid has a lot to answer for.

Ehh this isn't what I was hoping for at all actually. I'm disappointed. I like the story, and the chase part itself looks cool (though a little buggy, but that can be fixed), however, the general combat looked retarded.

I have to agree here. Of all the media released for this game this was the only piece that didn't impress me.

I thought the fight just looked plain silly. It's weird though, I remember in older videos the sword fighting with a load of guards looked ace. Maybe it's just the horrible silvery highlights on the characters or something...

Fighting reminds me of Pirates of the Carribean: At World's End, and that is not a good thing... Altair looks pretty stiff when he draws his sword.

Fighting does look a bit dodgey. Less fluid then I would have liked. Some of the chasing look a bit jerky too, but some of it looked good.

Might have to give this a rent before I purchase if its bad.

The silver highlight looks too "gamey", even though the devs are really aiming for authenticity and realism. (Just see those dev diaries) . I think it was a conscious design goal to make to put in some weird anomalies so the player knows there is something more to AC than the medieval stuff, maybe connected with the science fiction element of the game? Anyone remember The 13th Floor?

I think that is just to let ya know who you have targeted. It is a bit odd. Better than an arrow over their head though. lol

Yeah, this sounds about right. It also fits with the bizarre dream sequence style bit in the 3rd bit of the E3 demo footage after Altair kills Telal(sp?). These little anomalous touches are definitely no accident.

However I'd be more confident in the success of their design vision if the voice acting wasn't so poo.

I don't like the fact that they attacked him one by one. WTF, they surrounded him, take advantage of that!

Looks like a platform game with swords. Doesn't look all that impressive to me. The fighting was so awkward... I bet its just select enemy, mash a few buttons, do some sort of special finishing move and then the next one. meh.

Yeah, the combat reminded me a bit of the LOUSY combat in POTC. Not great and usually just a mash fest and then a killing move. Awkward too with all the other attackers around. And not that smooth. And annoying with the white highlights for your targets. Other than that, the game looks righteous!!

I think Asus pegged the combat right ..it seems like you have to time your moves which allows for some strategy instead of mashing buttons like in a fighing game ..lends itself to a more realistic atmosphere however I wont judge till I've tried it

if we can climb anywhere and play the game in a sandbox enviroment, combat really shouldnt be that much of an issue as the setting begs for one shot sneaky kills ..I guess that's the point of being an assassin

I have timed my moves like that in fighting games and brawlers for years now though. Not much strategy involved besides maybe being able to pick your dodge-then-attack technique with the proper button. We will see though....

Yeah, this is the stuff I really want to sink my teeth into. I just want to enter each town and climb to the top of the highest tower or wreak havoc on the cititzenry ala GTA. We will see if that is possible or not whenever people get their hot little hands on it!

true, I havent played a fighter in years so I wouldnt know ...however I'm kinda confident the combat wont disappoint too much

lol, driving around the city in a horse and carriage, half on the sidewalk running over pedestrians while being chased by cops on horseback/donkey drawn wagon ...if it's as fun as it is in gta I'm sold

Part of the difference is that in other fighter games when the enemy starts to attack, you could do a quick attack which interrupts their attack animation and the enemy will jump to a 'taking a hit' animation. But with AC it looks like you won't be interrupting their attack with one of your own (your arm would be impaled with his sword if you tried in real life). You will have to deal with that blow coming your way with a block or well timed counter. And it looks like you will have to be watching multiple guys who are surrounding you for when to hit that counter too. Which gives it that fencing timing which kotaku.com mentions.

Don't know if you guys already knew or not but this is what the sci-fi aspect is looking to be about (spoiler)

Moar jade
Those girls at a hotel and they are 'going to go play right now'. Uh huh

What a great idea. How about a Jade Raymond swim suit calender included in the collectors edition version of the game.
