At the end of Sandtraps (stuck)

SPOILERS so watch out






At the end of sandtraps when you have to fight that gian ant lion dealy, you get the guy with the turret to kill it essentially. But when it dies the vortugaunt at the door continually says "follow freeman" but doesn't move anywhere.
I have obviously tried it many times but only when i have killed the giant beast closer to the door, the vortigaunt goes out and makes that pheromone ball for the ant lions, and i pick it up. Then he proceeds to block the door that (i'm pretty sure i have to go through) goes to some camp on the inside.
I've gotten inside, but only through stacking boxes to get over him. Then when i'm inside the guy near the gate all the way at the end of the camp says that "nova prospect is just ahead" so i go to the door at the end and it's locked?!. Another box tower later and i got over the giant fence surrounding the door, and now there's this two log gate that is locked down!

I have now idea if i missed something to do here so if anyone can help me out that would be awesome!
 
You probably have the same bug a friend of mine encountered... not much alternative but to retry that level I'm afraid :(

What should happen is that the Antlion Guard is defeated, the Vortigaunt zaps it and lets you take the pheropods, then the Vort leads you into the camp, opens the fence door and then after a brief tutorial opens the log gate (once you've done everything he says).

Sometimes, if the Antlion Guard dies in a bad position it can screw up the script- good luck getting things to work this time round!
 
Solution to bugs

Just in case anyone comes across this thread as I did, there are actually four bugs to this part of the level which I managed to trigger, these are the solutions I found:

Bug 1 - Vortigaunt stands by white door, doesn't approach Antlion Guard:

With this bug the Vortigaunt just stands by the white door and continues to say "follow freeman" and "freeman must follow". This seems to happen when the Antlion Guard is not killed close to the door. The only solution to this seems to be to redo the battle with the Antlion Guard and make sure he dies close to the door. It's best to let the guy operating the gun turret above the door to do most of the work, this seems to draw the Antlion Guard closer to it.

Bug 2 - Vortigaunt releases pheropods from Antlion Guard but doesn't move:

This bug seems to be triggered similarly to bug 1. Sometimes the Vortigaunt will eventually approach the Antlion Guard after some time, even if it is was not killed close to the door. However after releasing pheropods the Vortigaunt doesn't do anything and again continues to say "follow freeman" and "freeman must follow". The solution to this is the same as Bug 1.

Bug 3 - Vortigaunt releases pheropods, opens door but then blocks it:

Even if you kill the Antlion Guard close to the door, the Vortigaunt releases pheropods and then opens the door for you, you may still trigger another bug. As the Vortigaunt heads towards the door and opens it for you it will then stop and stand in front of it, blocking your path. The solution to this bug is to stack a few more crates on top of the ones to the left of the door and then drop down in front of the Vortigaunt, allowing you to continue. However using this solution will trigger bug 4.

Bug 4 - Cannot proceed through gate to "nova prospect" or through log gate:

This bug is triggered by bug 3. After opening the door the Vortigaunt is meant to follow you and open the gate towards "nova prospect". It will then give you a bug bait tutorial before allowing you to proceed through the log gate further on. The solution which worked for me is to save the game after going through the door and then load the saved game, the Vortigaunt should then start following you.

Hope this helps a few of you.
 
One time, I killed the antlionguard, and when the Vortigaunt shot his zap at it, the antlionguard rolled over and killed the Vort. It was absolutley hilarious.
 
I've never found that being close to the door matters if you kill the antlion guard yourself rather than let the gunner do it.
 
Im still stuck..ive got away from the 1st bug...and ive entered the door by stacking crates and jumoping on top..but the problem is the Vortigaunt is not following me...so i followed freeman@hl2 guide...i saved the game and load it again..but its still the same...the Vortigaunt just stands there... can anyone be kind enough to send me a saved game file that has the Vortigaunt following us and guiding us to use the bug bait?

Right - you have to reload an older save point, not save the part where the game is FUBAR lol
go into your savegames and load one before you enter that area
if that doesnt work go into the console, enter sv_cheats 1 and type map d<insert map name>. you should be able to scroll through to find it
yes there was a rebel on the turret who was useless

Sadly, no, but it really just depends on where you kill the guard. Try and kill him on a slope, and when the vort shoots him he'll roll and collapse onto the Vort. Awesome stuff.

A ragdoll can kill a character? That's news for me...Interesting...
 
I killed it very far away from the door and it worked fine. Another cause of the bugs is killing it with the harpoon.

Yes, it can. Drop the antlionguards remains on an antlion for instance, and it'll squish it.
 
Man I have the same problem , the fence door is locked. plz someone post a sollution of it. or at least save file after that. Thanx
 
Why don't you check the maplist and load up the next level? You'll miss the bugbait tutorial, but it's not too important.

It isn't possible to eliminate every bug in the game. and there are very few bugs to begin with - the 'sandtraps' one, the jumping bug in 'our benefactors', maybe a couple of others. I know at least a dozen guys who finished HL2 twice without problems.
 
I've never experienced a single glitch in HL2, unless I was doing something I wasn't suppoed to do.
 
I had one when during a loading screen at Red Letter Day, Alyx, who was moving forward at the tmie, got duplicated and I couldn't get past the (non-moving) copy. Also once during the jumping thing on Our Benefactors. It happens.

Ooooo Thats me...anyway i didnt really notice that turret man until the third time i played the game, a real pain killing the antlion at the big sand pit and not go to the camp...:| i used up all my RPG ammo...i assume most bugs are in the com version... mine is the X-box one...mabye its better mabye its not
