I noticied over at newegg.com that the Athlon 64 went down $50 less.

$455 -to- $404

Yeah, they dropped prices a week or two ago.
403$ was the lowest on Pricewatch from Monarchcomputers last I looked.

hmmmm. is the amd 64 any good? I mean how much more power would it be compared to a xp? I dunno if they arer worth paying 300pound for.

check various tech sites for benchmarks and reviews , hardocp.com, anandtech.com, etc..etc.. personally i think at this point athlon64 is a waste of money, and if you wait for the enxt iteration of the chip it'll be muhc better value for your money.

Compared to other choices, it is the best performance and is lower in cost than the FX 51. Not to mention you can use normal DDR. It beats or ties Intels P4 3.2ghz in a lot of benchmarks which sells for 570$ @ newegg.
There will be better performing AMD64 chips in the future and a lot less cost to the end user (normal DDR, socket 939 better for upgrades) and thats why a some are waiting.
If you are buying now, you might as well get it though as it is one of the best performing chips with a relatively low cost.

I would wait before upgradeing to AMD64 as they are going to change the socket desighn, plus intel should release there new chip sometime soon which will lower prices a bit.

Although if you have money to burn get the FX51.

Personally, I dont think its worth it... Maybe if programs out could run in 64 bit, then even the expensive price could justify it (as it isnt that far for hardcore buyers). I doubt they will even be of much use in 6 months from now. Possibly in a year, then maybe we will have the PCIX and should (well, theoreticaly, considering progress) sell with more and more 64 bit cpu sockets, as the old get phased out... But right now its to expensive and too pointless. When we get to where its usefull, one can probably get the cheapest for $200-300. If even that.

I still can't afford it.

$100.00 dollars would be more within my price range.

I just bought the new December 2003 issue of PC Gamer magazine yesterday, and on the cover it said:

The new Athlon 64 Processor. Come Half-Life 2, you'll wish you had one...

But the actual article itself didn't say anything at all about why it would be better for Half-Life 2

what ive been saying all along......just wait....they are not worth it at this point.

Oh, yeah. Absolutely. With it's current price, I have no other choice but to wait.
