athlon equivalent to pentium

hi i was just wondering what an athlon XP 3200, would be compared to a pentium (like p4)(how many ghz.) and whuich ones better thx.

The 3200+ is supposedely what it's equivalent to.
3200+ = 3.2GHz

However, with the XP series, this isn't entirely accurate. It's pretty near, but I believe they're a little bit slower than the "equivalent" P4

the general theory is , the marketing people over at AMD would have us believe that at 3200+ and 3.2 p4 are about the same. now lets talk real world shall we..
it depends on your applications/games and the rest of the HW supporting cast.
also factor in $$$. most budget gamers seem to stick to AMD XP's because they overclock real well and can be had for cheap. but if you look at any HW review you will see that more $$$ = more FPS , there is no free lunch.
currently lots power users are into the upper level p4 2.0-3.0 ghz range.. while the bleeding edge guys are foaming at the mouth for the new AMD 64/FX stuff.
but bring your wallet for that round! there are tons of sites that regularly post
articles on build a gaming rig for a given price point 1000/2000/3000 etc...

Athlon XP 3200+ ~= 3.2GHz P4

The Athlon XP rating system claims to rate the level of performance based on the performance of the original Athlons. The rating system on the Athlon XP goes a long way to comparing it with the older 400 and 533 FSB Pentium 4's. The Pentium 4's today with 800FSB increased the performance by quite a bit so the rating is not as easy to compare to a P4 anymore.

Don't confuse the Athlon XP rating system with the Athlon 64's as they run with very high bandwidth and system efficency. They are top performers.

For the price of a Athlon XP 3200+ you can have an Athlon 64 2800+ which will do much better, especially in games.

Yes if you haven't gotten a 3200+ yet, definitely got for the 64 2800+. It will perform much better than most of the P4's especially in games, and when the the 64-bit Windows Longhorn and 64-bit games come out, you'll be all set. I think Newegg has the 64 2800+ for $173, retail is probably $180, but that's incredibly cheap for what you'd be getting. But you should also factor in the cost of a 64 compatible motherboard, they cost a little more than the normal Socket A ones.

I stand corrected. Good price for a 64 mobo. I'd say go for it. Much better than a 3200+.
