Hey guys, i just stopped by to see if anyone had some insight as to what might be going on with my proccessor. Anyways, i recently upgraded my motherboard and cpu from a 1.3ghz duron to an athlon xp 2400+ and i was wondering if anyone has ever hear of this issue.

I installed the mobo and cpu after 30 mins of fighting with my case (my mobo didn't want to fit in apparently... industry standards my ass lol) but anyways i managed to kinda squeeze it in and install everything back again. I reformated and reinstalled winXP again to avoid any conflicts and then went into my bios to check my settings. Well, to my surprise i notice my POST is reading the cpu as an 1800+. I download Sandra and to my surprise it is also running way too slow for a 2 ghz cpu.

After a few days of tweaking i went into the bios and changed my frequency multiplier from 100 mhz to 132 (my bios wouldnt let me past 132) but after a while i start noticing that my computer wont start up correctly after i shut it down. Everything time i power down the computer it locks at POST but then i reset it and it runs perfect until i shut it down again, kinda like a little trick to it.

Anyways, i tried going down from 132 (1.89 ghz or so) to 125 multiplier and thats what i have it currently set to. it seems to be stable for now but i'm not sure if my cpu is working up to its standards so i was wondering if this is normal or maybe it's just my CPU that might be defective. If its normal, i guess i was just misled, but i thought a 2.0 ghz cpu was suppossed to run at 2 ghz stock, not 2 ghz after going into the bios and changing it around.

Anyone able to help me here?

PS: I need some help finding out the FSB speed of my cpu, does anyone know how i can find that?

I figure my ram and mobo information might help:

mobo: ECS K7VTA3 (elitegroup)
ram: 512 MB DDR 2100 RAM

ECS is never that reliable, although with some tweaking it can be a good brand (I had an ECS for my 1700+ and had it OCed to 2000+), anyhow..

It sounds like the motherboard isn't recognizing the proper FSB speed. The FSB should be at 133, as 133x2 = 266. That's what a 2400+ runs at.

Anyhow, multiplier should be at 14.5, and the FSB at 133..

have you updated your motherboard BIOS? That could also be your problem (My ECS board had support for faster XP chips, but ONLY after I flashed the BIOS)

Could there possibly be a jumper on the motherboard for FSB...

This happens a lot, just put the FSB at 133 and the multiplier at 15 and you will be fine.

Yes there is a jumper in my motherboard to change the FSB speed, i just wanted to consult with some people before changing the FSB speed to avoid damaging any hardware.

will my ram cause any trouble while the CPU runs at 133 FSB?

Changed the jumpers, seems to be running just fine now.

Ill post again if i run into any lockups... i don't expect to though.

Thanks to all who posted.
