I have decided based on my finances that I can get one of these cards. Please let me know you opinions

ATI 9800 PRO 128MB OR GAINWARD GEFORCE FX5900XT 128MB

Need to stay below $200

Thanks

it's obvious on this site most people would suggest the ati card just b/c it will run better with hl2, and your on the wrong forum buddy

Wrong forum.

But, the Radeon R3XX series performs considerably better than the GeforceFX series.

9800 Pro is the way to go. It has (a lot) better DirectX 9 support and in par with the FX 5900 in OpenGL

It seems ATI is the way to go. Thanks

Want to make sure I am ready for HL2.

ati product right now is the best way to go
granted the new nvidia card may kick ass but their set of coding and pipelining seems to be dated and inefficient towards raw gaming. they are still using OPENGL and its becoming obsolete fast...

nvidia will probably go down really soon. or will get a new set of engineers who will revolutionize that company.. .

in the mean time.. Ati is better. .but both companies suck cause they still don't meet consumer demand. whats the point of having a next gen game if the developers won't make cards for the next next gen games..

its all lame and an attempt to get you all to buy cards again and again.

For under 200 go with the ati card but if you do want the best get an msi geforce 6

They are both the same, just that the 5900 wont perform as well as the 9800 Pro in HL2. But a Gainward should be ok, it will perform better than the ones you see in the benchmarks

The 5900XT is aimed at the midrage above the 5700Ultra and 9600XT.
The 5900 is aimed at the 9800pro.
In older games these cards will perform just fine.

In games that use a lot of DX9 shader effects the whole FX series really takes a nose dive. A 5900 will perform similar to a 9600pro in HL2 when the standard DX9 path. ;)

Get the 9800Pro. It rocks in all games.

I thought it was the fx5950 that was directly equivalent to the 9800pro , with the 5900 performing somewhat lower.

Odd the 5700 Ultra I got works great in all things (Runs Doom 3 all setting maxed at 1024/768 res)....hy gotta diss heh...the FX cards "supposedly" suck for Halflife 2 due to Pixel Shaders but the problems are with the drivers....

Definately Radeon 9800 Pro. Better Dx9, AF and AA support

The 5950 was nvidias answer to the 9800XT.

Yea i've always perferred Ati drivers since the 9700 pro...
The new 6800 is really good for both HL2 and Doom3...
I belive the X800 will perform slightly better than the 6800 series in HL2 with SM2.0 on, SM3.0 the 6800 ultra may perform at equal levels.
but the 6800s perform slightly better in Doom3... so it is ultimately user preference.
In terms of the 9800 pro vs. 5900, definately go for the 9800 pro, I have it and it kicks ass!

Get the MSI 9800 Pro that are being sold on Newegg. Its like $194 i believe. You can easily flash the bios to a 9800XT

The 9800pro is waaaaaay way better, not only does it have superior AA quality, it runs it faster. The shader quality of the 9800pro is so much better too. As well as having far better SM 2.0 rendering speeds. I heard the AF on the 5900 were slightly better but that's the only thing it has over a 9800pro.
