ATI Drviers

I think the amount if effects your game varies by the machine. Me personally i got about 4fps more running the 4.12 betas (in the VST)

Windows Xp
2ghz amd 2400+
radeon 9800 pro 128 (ICEQ)
1gig DDR 333 pc2700

I'd get the 4.12 betas though just because their optimized a little for hl2

The latest version of omegas is based off 4.10 catalysts

I did install them, I get about 4-5 more fps but It really lags alot. So i'm trying the omega drivers. People on cs source said they are better. I didn't have the windows xp service pack 2 installed. I'm installing it now. Could that be why I lag alot?

I tried using the Omega drivers... nothing but troubble and no FPS boost.

Ok, I do not no which drivers to keep - The Omega drivers or the Cataylist 4.12 bea drivers? It's so confusing, some people say this and some people say that! I need someone that really knows! I need someone to tell me please!!

Please help me!^

You have to test. Do the bench in CS:s if i have it.

Different drivers works best for different systems.

Would it be safe to just install these over the 4.9's?

Meaning, should I run driver cleaner and all that junk as well as uninstall the 4.9s or can I just install on top of them?

the big thing that helped my FPS was disabling the secondary display adapter. It gave me a good 6fps boost on all my games, and a big boost in VST. Also the 4.12's upped my fps by a lot of VST. The first time i installed the 4.12's they didnt do anything, but then i found out the best way to install them and they are working great!

hmmmm, i'm not liking them so far :(

Hercules Radeon 9800 pro 128 here.

Kinda wishing i'd kept with the drivers I had before at the moment...

the 4.12's are for 256mb card, mostly. The beta's add a memory allocation fix for 256mb cards, as well as some small game fixes.

Make sure to use "Driver Cleaner" to remove your old driver. Reboot when it tells you to. Once back into windows, you'll get a pop-up asking to locate the driver. Cancel that request out(twice for some cards) and then double-click your downloaded driver package. Let it do it's thing, and then restart when asked.once back to desktop, the screen should go black fora second or 2 while "smartgart" does it's thing.

I have a Asus 9800pro256/td, and the 4.12 driver allowed me to drop the overclock from XT speeds, and still maintain the same framerate. I don't know for sure about the 128mb versions of my card, but on monday i'll have mine back to test.

The part about driver cleaner is good, but in reality, the 4.11s are about the 256 MB bug. The 4.12s are the Source Engine optimized drivers, made specialy for Half-Life 2 and CS:S. I've been using those, and they're great.

wow, just realised why I was being dense.

I have 4.9 drivers.
4.9 > 4.12.
So, 4.9 drivers are newer than 4.12.
WRONG!

Damn maths! I knew it would mess with my head eventually.
Every year, the ATi Driver number goes up, so next year it will be 5.* and the following year 6.*
The second number indicates what month the drivers are for, 4.11 is the November driver, and 4.12 is the December driver and 4.9 was the September driver....
Its a weird scheme for doing it, as im not sure anywhere ever tells you it works like that... like yourself, i was always under the impression the higher numbers where more recent, but at another forum i read somewhere this is how they do their naming.
I went from 4.9 drivers to 4.12 and at maximum settings i acheived roughly 3fps more with my 9800pro (Maximum being 1024x768, 6xAA, 16xAF, Everything else at max) and with No AA just shy of 5fps...
But 71fps with the max settings at 1024x768 should be good enough for HL2 yeah? Im assuming that score in VST means its roughly how HL2 should run on my PC?

the problem was not quite fully addressed with the 4.11 drivers. You may also want to enable TRUFORM, as the source engine is one of few games that support it, and it will add to the game, as well as fps in most situations.

the 4.11's while ok, were very "hitchy", causing the need for a "cl_smooth 0" while playing CS:S. I don't need this command anymore. Think of the 4.12's as a polished beta4.11, and the new 4.11's as not for 256mb cards. I got huge graphical errors using the 4.11's, but only under specific lighting situations.

January's driver will proably be the best "HL2" driver, of course, that does us no good now.

My 9600XT gives me horrible texture corruption with any newer drivers than cat 4.9, dunno why.

I'm in this camp with my 9800 Pro. In CS:S, anyway, my other games seem to do allright. Still, CS:S is Source engine, and if it screws up in CS:S, there's a chance it'll screw up in HL2.

*rolls back*

is this compatible with windows 98 or an ati all inwonder 9800 pro?

you want to know if ATI drivers will work on Windows 98, with your AIW 9800 Pro? They should do, check the ATI website to see what OS they support.

Anyone got these to work on win2k sp4? tried before but they gave an error, the 4.11's worked fine?

Thanks
