This range has been adjusted down from the preliminary guidance announced on June 6, 2005, due to a more conservative expectation on the ramp of new products in the fourth quarter,” ATI said. The company said on a conference call that its new graphics chip, the R520, is delayed.

Looks like the Nvidia GeForce 7800GTX will be the only next-gen card out for some time.

Shame. Its not doing them any favours really by delaying teh chip, but from teh sounds of that article, they don't have much choice.

Like I said previously, I really hope they don't go under. The graphics card industry needs at least 2 companies competing.

They're probably only saying this so they will have some cards actually made when they launch it instead of the usual ATI habit of launching a card months before they get round to delivering them to vendors.

Aye, competition keeps pushing things forward... But then again if ATI went under and nvidia was the only company out, maybe they would work on making their cards cheaper and such... Then we would definetely get another company to come in to try and steal the crown again.

Well the rumor was it was coming out at Comedex but it's not here so I already assumed it was pushed back.

I've always gone with Nvidia, ATI is run by clowns, that's my theory.

Last time I checked, neither ATI or Nvidia could even dent Intel's share of the graphics market. Granted, they only really do integrated chips but I'm sure neither ATI or Nvidia would object to being 2p behind them.

Gah ATi triumphs above all. I hope you Nvidia freaks toast in the fiery warmths of hell. All your low performance, low image quality garbage and not to mention hacky drivers.

for all Nvidia and ATI fanboys, this is bad news for the following reason.

Competition = Good

got that?

Competition = Good

Therefore

No Competition = Bad

So the R520 Delay = Bad for the consumer.

Competition is what caused the massive performance leaps with the X800/6800 series of the past generation.

actually, and i prefer ATI, the 7800 is directed at delivering high image quality without sacrificing FPS

I like to use what gets the best results thinking about it, see my above post if that isn't clear enough.

Though a good point to make is the current crop of cards are more than capable of playing any game atm.

7800 atm is a neat aa package, sound image quality and a bit of futureproofing. But I can play farcry and bf2 and d3 maxed on an OC X800XT.. Need you really have that much power atm? :)
