If they were to re-write their codepath for opengl to compete better with nvidia, would they need to push out new cards? Or could something like that be updated in a driver release?

I think it has to do with the physical piplines in the gfx card, it was lowered in the x800 or somthing. I dont know mucha bout it though.

Its in the driver release. They won't have to put new cards out. They have actually been re-writing ther OPENGL codepath for the past 2 months.

Ummmmmm...

it has nothing to do with Hardware but its depends on the code itself in the drivers, how each operation and such is assigned and how effeciently it is done within the GPU. im guessing if ever ATI needed a new OGL code path it is now, and that if the 4.8 Drivers with a new and much improved OGL code path being released early next months around the same time as Doom 3 would boost sales big time. i sure hope ATI is intended to get all it can out of my 9600XT.

/me is sad that he can't even run Counter-Strike under OpenGL on his Radeon 9700 with 6x FSAA and 16x AF at silky smooth framerates anymore

Not sure if it's ATi or VALVe's fault.. but I know it happens to 99% of the ATi users

So why wouldn't ati want to be on top? How come they haven't released drivers that show the power of their latest x800 line?

The entire OGL code path consists of a bazillion lines of code. It's impossible to do a complete rewrite in just a couple of months. I'm guessing that the OpenGL improvements are gonna take a bit longer.

I'd say it was more of an optimization maybe?? like Arno said it's a bit drastic to carry out an entire revamp - anyone got a link for some info?

People are under estimating the resources and time re-writing the OGL path will take. To begin with they've got to do research into how they could improve their OGL path, that's even before they start writing it. Implementation after that is going to take a while. You probably won't see the new OGL paths until the next generation of cards are out.
