"ITS GOOD CARD FOR THE MONEY BUT WITH DIRECT X 9.0c COMING OUT SOON AND GAMES WITH PS 3.0 SUPPORT THIS GRAPHICS CARD WILL FEEL DATED VERY SOON TAKE MY ADVICE STICK WITH NVIDIA THIS ROUND, THEY WON IT"

quote from a guy on newegg about the radeon x800 xt.

buying a video card has been a problem for me, and iwa just wondering( i know that radeon is the preferred graphics card for hl2.) here are my questions:

1. is the geforce 6800 ultra better than the x800 pro or xt?

2. with radeon being the preferred card for hl2 wil lthe 6800 ultra stil lrun it at max settings?

3. will the geforce 6800 ultra be able to handle dx 9.0c, or was the guy in that post ust saying that the future nvidia cards will be able to work with it?

4. how much does it cost?

im gonna go for an ati card eventually .....from my oppinion it will run half life 2 much faster than nvidias cards and will get more frames per second....so im going to go with an ati card :)

That's a pretty gay argument. Does he mean that suddenly about the best card on market is dated? If so, does he mean other cards are not? ;p I mean, ofcourse they will get dated but so will everything else. x800 is one of the best currently and thats it. Waiting for new generation cards is always the worst tactic because there is always the next gfx card generation coming.

For HL2, I would go for an ATi card. Don't know anything about 6800 and prices though sorry ;[ but at least IIRC Valve preferred ATi =P

Games are coming with PS 3.0 but can't ATI add this to the drivers. Plus DX9.0c is surely just as easy to upgrade to, this card doesn't just support DX9.whatever right?

Even if it can't get PS 3.0 does it really matter, what beenfits would they provide?

How would he know if the X800 xt isnt even available yet? Not to mention the XT does have 9.0c DX support. And PS3.0 is not around the bend. I hate reviewers on newegg they're the biggest dumbasses in the world. Go with whichever you want but his claims on the xt are complete bullshit.

Everyones arguing about SM3.0 and SM2.0 - Until Unreal3 gets here, we really won't notice the lack of SM3.0 support at all. And i'm guessing SM3.0 games will have support for SM2.0 just like DX9 games support DX8 but with a few graphical differences.
X800 can put out a blistering fast frame rate, over twice that of it's predecessor - so why should it be outdated so early? it will still be better than the majority of cards even in a few years time... how many people now are still running ti4200s or less? lots.

It'll be a minimum spec card at a guess, since the 6800 struggles to put the frames out at a nice res. That is as a tech demo with all details on full and with SM3.0 drawing each pixel so i'm guessing it'd be ok in 2.0

Did you just say the x800 will be a minimum spec card for unreal 3?

I hope he didn't mean it. I hope he was being sarcastic. If not....ouch.

Yes, he did. Have you seen the tech demo from the nVidia NV40 launch? I lost the link...

In addition to that, many features of the Unreal 3 engine simply won't be possible on the R420 hardware.

Im sure you all know this but the SP2 beta is ready for downloading at microsoft that comes with directx 9.0c the SP2 works great on my pc and I have had no problems, has a nice popupblocker built into IE.
When you go to windows update where you see the V4 in the address change it to V5 and it will take you to the SP2 download page.

HL2 will still be as much playable on an nvidia 6800ultra as it will be on an x800XT maxed out settings. You think doom3 will be unplayable on an ATI because doom3 choose nvidia instead? i dont think so.

Listen, Valve may of chosen ATI but that does'nt mean they will shit all over nvidia and loose money just because ati and nvidia are in competition. Valve LIKE ATI...they dont LOVE ati.

Edit/ By the time unreal engine 3.0 is out even i would of upgraded to an XIII25000XT ub3r edition ATI or a 48000ultra nvidia ....ive got an X800pro atm ....i dont plan on it being able to run unreal engine 3.0 good.

Lets not forget, the unreal engine atm is one of the most advanced engines....the unreal engine 3.0 wont be out for a while yet. Nevermind have a game running on it, like unrealtournament 2009.

9700 tx

im getting a good deal on a radeon 9700 tx from my friend..just wondering if it will run hl2 good/decent. thanks

9700 tx? All indications are that the 9700 will be able to run HL2 well, though we have no benchmarks to cite. tx?

There is no such card as a 9700TX bro.

Unless that is the model name that some manf uses.

I would not invest money into PS3.0 because you think it will be something big or in any way important. It is a feature that Nvidia and ATI both will use in the future but it will not be a needed feature.

In the most recent UE3 interview, Tim doesn't mention that they use the displacement mapping (DP), which is in VS3.0 (DX9.0c). He says they use virtual displacement mapping (Which Shader version 2.0 can do) on large areas (Outdoor walls) that would otherwise take a hit using true DP (VS3.0). For more important models such as characters, they don't even use any DP.

What is displacement mapping? It is a way to extract detail from a texture, basicly. It makes the texture stand out, like the grooves in a brick wall. Why he says they won't use DP on characters etc, is because they will be high enough poly that it is unnecessary.
Interview

IMO it's all marketing and a little bit to do with performance, Nvidia's shader performance anyway. They need the more efficent instructions to compete with ATI's stronger shader performance.

Choose the card you want and either will do you good. But IMO don't base it on 'the future' with Shader 3.0.

btw the X800 adds many improvements over the 9800, that are in Shader model 3 like longer instruction length. They just do not have all of the improvements to make them Version 3.0. They left out the additions that require too much extra power/transistors.

9700 tx

the card is a 128 DDR ATI Radeon 9700 TX w/ TV-Out, i havent ever heard of tx but right now im running a 9100, this 9700 will be better obviously right? im jsut trying to meake sure bfore any purchases

Okay the 9700 TX was a graphics card made for Dell computers. Basically it is a Radeon 9700 that runs at a slower clock speed. It will run on your computer, but expect the performance to be about the same as a 9600 XT.

blahblah will i be able to find drivers for this card on the ati website...if you cant help someone else please do...thank you

so for future games i'd be better off getting a 6800 ultra, because it has al lthe support for dx9.0c?!

:dozey: Yeah but in the future there will be better cards that you would want instead of the 6800.

In short. We dont know untill those future games come...... and by that time a 6800 will be like a 9700 today.
